Peloton updating the Home Screen of Peloton Bike with Personalized Dynamic Layouts

Peloton has announced an upgrade of the home screen sections, allowing members to have a more personalized workout experience. Personalized home screen layouts (also known as dynamic home screen layouts) are reportedly being trialed on Bike devices over the next few weeks.

This update will enable Peloton to show different content & classes towards the top of the home screen to different users, depending on their habits & content they ineract with the most.

The home screen is the first screen members see when opening the Peloton platform once logged in, containing information such as upcoming live classes, top instructors, streak information, class recommendations, and much more.

Peloton published a press release regarding personalized home screen layouts, which goes into great detail about the overall home screen and personalization process. Overall, Peloton is infusing more personalization into the home screen sections – particularly when it comes to class recommendations and the overall layout and hierarchy of the various sections.

According to Peloton there are three main goals of the home screen, as outlined below:

  • Help users easily find more of what they already like,
  • Help users explore content of adjacent interest, and
  • Educate users about the content and what purpose it serves towards their higher needs.

Personalized sections of the home screen are designed to achieve the first two goals. The press release states:

The new rows for the first goal utilizes the already-known user interests towards certain types of content to help them quickly find classes they already like. The rows for the second goal helps Members explore the vast library of content Peloton has to offer by easing them into new types of content they may not have otherwise interacted with.

For example, one area of personalization is demonstrated through instructors. Peloton wants to encourage members to try new instructors, so the personalized section on the home screen may display instructors that are new to the member, but share similarities with an instructor they frequently take classes with. According to Peloton:

A better way that decreases the perceived lift of taking a class with new instructors would be to recommend an instructor that is similar to the one the user already likes. It is also imperative that we communicate explicitly that we are recommending that new instructor because of the similarity. By providing this recommendation explanation, a user may be more inclined to try out a new instructor.

Peloton also personalizes recommendations based on favorite artists, music, class duration, and more. Many of these sections have been available for a while now, but Peloton has recently updated the placement of the content based on members’ interaction with that content.

Members can view various iterations of the home screen on the app, web browser, and hardware devices. Peloton periodically updates the home screen with new layouts, sections, and highlights.

While this test is being trialed on the Bike first, we may see them roll out to other devices like the Tread & Row in the coming months depending on the results of the tests on the Bike.
