Rumor: Peloton to start selling weights, shoes, and more through apparel site (making referral credits valid?)

Update – The new items were added to the apparel store on December 1st.

Peloton appears to be preparing to add traditional “accessories” items to the Apparel site – which means that members could potentially use referral credits on those items.

Historically, accessories – a category that includes products such as dumbbells & weights, cycling shoes, yoga blocks, resistance bands, and more – have only been available via the Peloton website. The Peloton Apparel site is it’s own separate website & shopping cart system.

When members share their referral code to purchase a hardware device (i.e. a Bike, Bike+, or Tread), the person they share their code with receives $100 off of accessories to complement the hardware purchase. The referring member receives $100 to use on the Peloton Apparel site.

If accessories are added to the Peloton Apparel site, this would open up a whole new range of options for what members could use their referral credits on.

Peloton has added entries for several accessories to the apparel site. Although they don’t have a category yet, they appear to be going live this evening. Below is a partial list of of Peloton accessories that will potentially be added to the apparel site:

  • Reversible workout mat
  • Peloton Altos cycling shoes
  • Original Peloton cycling shoes
  • Bike mat
  • Dumbbells
  • Light weights
  • Yoga blocks
  • Yoga mat
  • Yoga strap
  • Peloton Heart rate band
  • Resistance bands
  • JBL x Peloton earbuds
  • Urbanears Sumpan earbuds

If this change goes through and these products are made available on the Peloton Apparel site, members could presumably refer a friend and then put their $100 credit towards one of these items instead of the standard apparel purchase. There is always a chance they could update it and only allow certain categories of items on the apparel site to be valid for using referral codes – but we have not seen any indication of this yet.

Peloton recently (and temporarily) rolled back a change they made last year when they limited the referral program to only the account owner. From now through the end of the year, any profile or member that is tied to an All-Access membership (i.e. you own a Bike, Tread, or Row) can once again take part in the referral program. You can read more in our recent article.

If this change goes into place – would you use your referral credits on these accessories, or on regular apparel?
