Peloton has shared preliminary information with Tread+ owners about the rollout of the rear safety guard. Members reported receiving an email from Peloton on November 3 indicating that the rollout will begin in early 2024.
As a refresher, the Tread+has not been available for sale since 2021 due to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall. After years of reaffirming that they were working with the CPSC on a fix for the device, Peloton announced in May 2023 that a rear guard had been approved to address previous safety issues.
Though some members returned their Tread+ under the recall guidelines to receive a full refund – which members have until November 6, 2023 to do – other members decided to keep their devices and wait for a fix.
According to the email sent to Peloton Tread+ owners today, signed by Brad Greenawalt, who is the VP of Membership at Peloton:
Our new Peloton Tread+ Rear Safety Guard marks an industry-first safety design for slat belt treadmills. The Rear Safety Guard prevents pull-under of persons, objects, and pets, and further enhances the Tread+ safety features. The Rear Safety Guard pivots away from the Tread+ if hands, fingers, or other objects come into contact with the gap between the guard and belt, shutting off power and safely decelerating the slat belt. We are offering the Rear Guard to all Tread+ Members who would like to receive it, free of charge, as part of Peloton’s voluntary recall done in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Starting early 2024, Peloton’s Member support team will send you everything you need to schedule your free Rear Safety Guard installation when it’s time.
This indicates that in early 2024, Tread+ owners can expect communications from Peloton providing additional information and initiating the scheduling process to receive a rear guard for their device. It is currently unclear how long the scheduling process and implementation phase will take – but what is clear is that it will be free of charge.
Peloton announced earlier this week that the Tread+ will cost $5,995 when it returns to market; which will be this December sometime. As we previously reported, there will not be a trade-in program for Tread owners who are looking to upgrade to the Tread+.
We will continue to share updates regarding the rear guard for existing Tread+ owners as details become available.
