CPSC approves a rear guard fix for the Peloton Tread+ recall

Peloton has announced that the CPSC has approved a rear guard for the Peloton Tread+, which will end the recall on the Tread+ later this year.

The new rear guard will be available later this year for free for all Tread+ owners. Peloton will send a service technician to members home to install the new guard.

Peloton has emailed owners notifying them of the fix – email is included at the end of this post.

The press release said:

The innovative guard features a breakaway design that pivots away from the treadmill when it comes into contact with an object, shutting off power and safely decelerating the belt. Tread+ Members can now register to receive the guard by completing this form.

You can find the form to request a rear guard for the Tread+ here: https://www.onepeloton.com/tread-plus/rear-safety-guard

Unfortunately, the press release doesn’t state when exactly this year the rear guard will be available, or on what date the Tread+ might be available for purchase to new members. However, the CPSC mentions a “Fall 2023” date for the rear guard on their own press release:

It says:

The approved rear guard repair eliminates the potential for entrapment near the rear roller of the treadmill. The rear guard repair features a breakaway design that pivots away from the treadmill when it comes into contact with a person or object, shutting off power to the unit and decelerating the belt.
While the guard is being manufactured, consumers may register in advance for a Fall 2023 delivery. The rear guard and installation will be free to consumers.

The CPSC went on to share there have been additional injuries reported since the recall took place, but no more deaths:

Since the May 2021 recall, there have been 279 additional reported incidents and 61 additional reports of injuries. To date, in addition to the reported death, Peloton has received a total of 351 incident reports of pull-unders, including 90 reports of injuries to consumers.

Peloton has also updated their FAQ page about the recall. It notes that a full refund is still available to those who want one until November 2023.

We shared earlier this week that Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy remained “hopeful” the Tread+ would be back, and earlier this year we shared that Peloton had filed a patent application for the rear guard, which appears to be what the CPSC approved today.

Those with more questions about the recall can reach out to Peloton customer support.
