NBA League Pass Streaming Will Not Be Available on some older Peloton Bikes

Earlier last month Peloton officially launched NBA League Pass, allowing members to watch NBA games on their Bike, Tread, and Row devices (with a separate NBA League Pass membership). However, it appears that not all members will have access to NBA League Pass in reality.

Specifically, a few members have reported receiving emails over the past week or two informing them that their Peloton Bike is too old to receive the update. The subject line of the email reads: “Information about NBA League Pass on your Bike.” The email states:

Hi [Name],
As a part of our partnership with the NBA, we are bringing NBA League Pass to compatible Peloton devices. Older versions of the Peloton Bike, including yours, do not support NBA League Pass, but will still have access to our collection of NBA themed classes. If you are interested in upgrading to the latest Peloton tablet version, you may purchase one at one.peloton.com/shop/accessories.
You continue to have access to everything you love about Peloton including our thousands of instructor-led classes plus scenic and Lanebreak content. We hope to bring you access to other streaming options in the future.

Interestingly, some members who received this email already had access to the Peloton Entertainment beta and Netflix beta features – meaning that they were able to access some entertainment content on their devices. It is currently unclear why NBA League Pass is not being allowed.

Moreover, it is not solely members with Generation 1 bikes (who were notified in 2019 they would stop getting new software features) that have reported receiving this email; some members with Generation 2 bikes have received the notification as well.

On the Peloton Entertainment support page, Peloton does not explicitly specify which devices are equipped for NBA League Pass. Instead, they direct members to the support team:

Some of our touchscreens do not support NBA League Pass, but may support other entertainment streaming services. For assistance with determining what streaming services your touchscreen supports, please chat with our Support team here.

It is possible that some tablets not being able to get NBA, but still being able to get Netflix and other services, is due to the Digital Rights Management (DRM) licensing the NBA enforces on their streaming platform; however, this is not confirmed.

Peloton first announced their partnership with the NBA and WNBA in October, teasing that NBA League Pass was on the way. When NBA League Pass officially rolled out, this also brought Peloton Entertainment out of the beta phase and expanded the feature to all members.
