Peloton confirms only difference in the new Peloton Tread+ is the addition of the rear safety guard

The Peloton Tread+ will be back for sale soon, after having been off the market for nearly 3 years due to a CPSC recall.

One open question people have had is if there will be any changes or upgrades to the Tread+ once it is available for sale again. Recently, Peloton has confirmed via social media that the new Tread+ will be exactly the same as the old Tread+, with the exception of the rear safety guard being installed.

In their statement, they said: “There are no additional hardware changes being made to the Peloton Tread+ besides the addition of the Peloton Tread+ Rear Safety Guard”

If you are curious about what the rear safety guard is, or how it will work, we recently got some images and video of a Tread+ with the rear safety guard installed from a Peloton showroom – including showing how it automatically stops the Tread+ if something gets caught in it.

One of the easiest things that could have changed on the hardware, had any changes been made, would have been an updated Tread+ tablet. This wouldn’t have necessarily been any outwards changes, but rather an upgrade of internal components to increase the lifecycle of the tablet. However, from these statements it appears that will not be the case – and the tablet on the new Tread+ is the same exact one as those on existing Tread+ found in members homes now.

As a reminder, the new Tread+ will be back for sale sometime in December, but with an increased price of $5,995.

In a previous earnings call, Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy had discussed that the updated price point was due to the “premium nature” of the product, saying “We’ve updated the Tread+ price point to reflect its premium nature.” Prior to the recall, and the new price point, the Peloton Tread+ cost $4,295 – meaning the Tread+ now costs $1,700 more than it previously did.

McCarthy also talked about in that same earnings call how the first 10,000 or so Tread+ sold would be fulfilled from “existing inventory”, and ship in 6-8 weeks. In other words, this will be from Tread+ that were manufactured (but never sold) that have been in warehouses and storage during the recall period. These will not be refurbished or returned units – they are still considered new and have never been sold or delivered.

Once those first 10,000 Tread+ are sold, there will be a short pause in shipment to members. At this point, Peloton will have to restart their manufacturing lines, and start creating brand new ones again – which will take a little bit of time to start this process again.

Based on the statements of how the warehoused units would be sold, it was widely expected that there would not be any changes, aside from the rear safety guard being installed on all of them, in the new Tread+ being sold – and these statements Peloton is now making confirm that.

Although there are no hardware changes, Peloton has started to add some software changes to the Tread+. Over the last week they have been adding the auto-incline feature to the Tread+. One would also expect that the Tread+ would be getting Lanebreak shortly as well.

For those with the newer Tread who might be interested in getting the Peloton Tread+, Peloton has recently shared there are currently no plans for a trade in program.
