First Look at New Peloton Tread+ Rear Guard (Safety Feature) in Retail Stores

As of November 10, 2023, the Peloton Tread+ has returned to showrooms in the United States, giving customers the first look at the new rear guard. The rear guard is the added safety feature designed to address previous safety issues as identified in the 2021 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall.

The Tread+ that has returned to showrooms is reportedly the exact same device that was sold previously; but with the new rear guard added. You can see a video of the device from the Troy, Michigan showroom & other retail stores below or here on YouTube. Note that the video does not have any audio.

The Peloton Tread+ rear safety guard serves two central functions. First, it prevents items behind the device from coming into the device and getting stuck in the slats, or sucked underneath the Tread. The slats are protected from the floor and any potential items that may come near it by the guard.

Second, the rear guard keeps items and people from being pinched at the back of the Tread. The rear guard has a breakaway design – meaning that if something gets into the piece, the guard falls open. When this happens, the Tread immediately powers down; the slats halt, the screen turns off, and the device fully powers off.

The Tread+ will become available for purchase in December of 2023 for $5,995. All new orders will have this near rear guard already installed.

Peloton has previously said that the first 10,000 units sold will be from “existing inventory – in other words, it will be Treadmills that were previously manufactured before the recall took place – but with the new rear guard installed. Only once those first 10,000 are sold will new units be manufactured. Note that those 10,000 units are not returns or refurbished units – they are new units that just happened to have been manufactured a few years ago.

As mentioned above, all indications are that the new units being sold are the same exact units as what members have now – just with the rear guard pre-installed. It appears to be the same exact screen as was used before – if we get more information on this we will be sure to provide an update.

Unfortunately for those who might be wanting to get a Tread+ but already have the smaller Tread, Peloton has indicated that they do not plan to have a Tread to Tread+ trade in program.

Peloton also recently reached out to existing Tread+ users to inform them that they can expect to receive information about scheduling an appointment to receive their free rear guard in early 2024.
