Peloton’s New Waitlist Claim System has a “Timeout” Period (Quiet Period) for Claiming Classes Overnight

Peloton has implemented a “timeout” period for their new waitlist system at Peloton Studios New York (PSNY) and Peloton Studios London (PSL).

As a refresher, we recently shared that Peloton made a number of updates to the waitlist process as a part of their migration to a new studio booking system. Waitlist classes now count towards members’ weekly in-person studio limit of four classes; and waitlist spots are no longer automatically converted when a spot opens up; members must claim the newly opened spot within two hours.

However, Peloton has now implemented a “timeout,” or “quiet,” period for the waitlist claim process, in which the two hour time window does not start to claim classes overnight (in local studio time). In other words, the requirement to claim a newly opened waitlist spot within two hours is inactive during these windows.

For PSNY, the timeout period covers 10:00pm ET to 6:00am ET. For PSL, the timeout period covers 10:00pm GMT to 6:00am GMT. The timeout periods are likely intended to provide members an opportunity to claim a waitlist spot even if one opens up in the middle of the night when most people are sleeping.

However, it is important to note that the timeout period does not adjust depending on the member’s time zone; it applies specifically to the time zone in which the studio is located – Eastern Time (ET) in the United States, and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in the United Kingdom. This means that, for example, if you live in the Pacific Time Zone in the U.S. but are flying into New York to take a class at PSNY, your timeout period is 7:00pm PT to 3:00am PT. This means in theory, you could receive an email at 3:00am PT and only have until 5:00am PT to claim it.

PSNY’s new waitlist email reads:

If a spot opens up more than 24 hours before the class you will be notified via email. You will need to claim your spot within 2 hours or it will expire and the system will remove you from the waitlist. Bookings made with a pre-existing credit will move automatically onto the class list – no action will be required. Our studio booking system features a timeout period from 10 PM to 6 AM local studio time. The two-hour window to secure a spot in class opens after 6 AM.

Peloton’s London studio waitlist language has similar language now as well, saying:

Our studio booking system features a timeout period from 10 PM to 6 AM local studio time. The two-hour window to secure a spot in class opens after 6 AM.

Have you experienced Peloton’s new waitlist processes? If so, what are your thoughts on the new system?
