Peloton App no longer works on Apple Watch Series 1 & 2 – now requires Watch OS 7 (Series 3 & newer)

A recent update to the Peloton Apple Watch app has removed support for some older generation Apple Watches.

Up until this week, the Peloton app on Apple Watch has worked on WatchOS 6. The most recent version has changed that, and the Peloton Apple Watch app requires WatchOS 7 or later.

The biggest change is that this effectively means the Peloton App is now only available for Apple Watch Series 3 or newer – as these are the only devices that can run WatchOS 7.

The Peloton FAQ page for the Apple Watch app has been updated and now says the following:

The Peloton Apple® Watch App requires Members to be on WatchOS 7.0 for Watch series 3 and above.

Prior to this update, the Peloton Apple Watch app worked on WatchOS 6 – which was also available on Apple Watch Series 1 or 2. This had been the same requirement since the Peloton Apple Watch app was first released in December 2019.

Peloton has also been confirming this change via social media. One reply posted in the Official Peloton Facebook Group said:

If you have an Apple Watch Series 1 or 2, these unfortunately cannot be updated to Watch OS 7 or higher. Therefore, the Peloton App is no longer compatible with those models.

It’s not clear what new features were added in this most recent update. However, earlier this year Peloton did add the ability to use the Apple Watch as a heart rate monitor for the Peloton Bike, Bike+, Tread and Tread+. While members who had the Apple Watch Series 1 or 2 were able to use that feature when it first came out, they will no longer be able to if they update their app, based on the new OS requirements.

The Peloton iPhone app is also getting some new features in the coming weeks. A new Just Work Out feature is currently rolling out for iPhones over the next several weeks.

Thanks for confirming this. I wondered why the app had disappeared from my older watch. I guess I won’t be using both any longer.

Finally I find out why my app disappeared. So strange that they just made a big deal about the app syncing to older models then took it away a few months later! So annoyed!

does this apply to the recent update for the bike too?

So, no one has come up with a work-around? No special apps that can connect somehow? this is so annoying… Time for a new watch, I guess…
