Peloton May Partner With Other Marathons + Content For “Performance Athletes” + Marathon Training

In the latest Peloton earnings call, CEO Barry McCarthy discussed plans to cater towards “performance athletes” with marathon-focused content and new partnerships.

In a section of the call discussing the Peloton Tread, McCarthy shared the company’s plans to provide special content centered around performance athletes, specifically those training for marathons. A significant part of this strategy involves strategic partnerships with major marathon organizers, and providing members with immersive 3D courses and classes that incorporate the auto-incline feature to provide an optimum training experience.

Peloton already has a partnership with one of the most famous marathon organizers in the world, the New York Road Runners (NYRR). The multi-year partnership was announced in October 2023, and there have already been multiple audio-only content releases, including a TCS NYC Marathon Highlights Run and 5 Borough Outdoor Runs. Numerous Peloton instructors ran the marathon in 2023, and we anticipate new scenic content from the 2023 NYC Marathon to be released in early 2024.

McCarthy’s latest comments suggest that Peloton captured the full NYC marathon course and will provide special content for members who are training specifically for that race. Moreover, this will involve the Tread auto-incline feature, which automatically adjusts the Tread’s incline based on the class plan. McCarthy stated:

“We entered into a partnership with New York Road Runners, I’m super excited about that, and we filmed in 3D, the Marathon course, the New York Marathon course this year and that will be available on our platform for runners who are training for the marathon. And we also captured the metadata and so the elevation on the Treadmill will automatically change as you progress down the course.”

This implies that members can likely expect a very immersive experience in this upcoming content, more accurately simulating the real-world conditions of marathon courses, offering users a more authentic and challenging training experience.

While the initial focus is on the NYC Marathon, McCarthy hinted at Peloton’s aspirations to expand this programming to other major marathons worldwide. This move could open up new opportunities for partnerships with marathon organizers globally and position Peloton as a global leader in providing specialized training content for marathon runners. McCarthy stated:

“We hope to expand that to other leading marathons in the world and continue to lean into that segment of the marketplace, which I think helps to reposition the brand in important ways.”

McCarthy’s comments suggest that Peloton aims to tap into the growing segment of performance athletes and provide specialized content for both avid and first-time marathoners.
