Peloton says all remaining instructors have signed new contracts

In light of another Peloton instructor departure – this one seemingly more sudden than the others – Peloton has released a new statement regarding contracts – and saying that all remaining instructors have signed new contracts.

In case you missed it, yesterday German instructor Tobias Heinze announced that he was leaving Peloton effective immediately. Though his classes will remain in the on-demand library, the circumstances surrounding his departure appear to be separate from the three other instructors who recently departed – Ross Rayburn, Kendall Toole, and Kristin McGee – which pertained to contract negotiations.

In light of this, Peloton put out a press release to provide further clarification on the status of their instructors. The statement began by implying that coaches departure is akin to the “evolution” of the Peloton app, or new features being added, stating:

As part of the Peloton community, Members know that evolution is core to the Peloton brand, whether through the latest playlist, a new class modality, a new product offering, or the latest feature in the Peloton App. Change is constant.

In other words, instructor arrivals and departures will always occur at Peloton. The release went on to confirm that all remaining instructors have signed a new contract – meaning that members can breathe a sigh of relief that there should be no further announcements in the immediate future.

According to the release:

Recently, our team of Instructors completed contract discussions, a normal course of business when working with professional athletes (although they are far more than that). Three (out of 57) valued and tenured teammates departed. We’ve refrained from previously commenting at length about this process out of respect for our Instructors, past and present. The process takes over a year and shows great care to each individual, their contributions and our business needs.

The release went on to explicitly state that Tobias’ departure was separate from the recent round of contract negotiations:

Separate from the recent contract process, German Instructor Tobias Heinze will also be parting ways with Peloton, as of today. We wish Tobias the best in his next chapter.

Tobias announced his departure via Instagram on June 30, 2024. Members had begun to speculate about Tobias’ status after a previously announced series did not reach liftoff, and he did not teach his in-person classes for the German “London Calling” members weekend on June 29. You can read all of the details available regarding Tobias’ departure in our latest article.

As of publishing time, 55 instructors are still listed on the Peloton instructor page. Christian Vande Velde, who recently returned to Peloton as a guest instructor, presumably does not maintain a standard contract. Adding back in the recently departed Ross Rayburn, Kristin McGee and Kendall Toole gives you the 57 instructors referred to in Peloton’s statement. As Peloton’s statement noted – Tobias’ departure is “separate from the recent contract process” so he is not counted in those numbers. All 4 of those instructors (Kristin, Ross, Kendall, and Tobias) were removed from the Peloton instructor website early in the morning on July 1, 2024.

The press release once again mentions the possibility of new instructors – which their previous statement about contract negotiations did. However, the release does not commit to any kind of timeline:

The value and impact our Instructors bring to our Community is unmatched. We will continue to expand how their unique voices and expertise are leveraged in support of our Member goals, creating the best-in-class Member experience for which Peloton is known. As we think about our future, we are excited about the opportunity to bring new talent to our Instructor roster to continue offering an impactful and entertaining experience for our Community.

Nonetheless, the press release indicates that the 54 remaining instructors have all signed new contracts. Of course, the caveat here is that contracts are not ironclad, and instructors may still leave at any point in time. However, it seems that Peloton’s expectation from this press release is no more are in the immediate future.
