Peloton ending direct sales in Germany; transitioning to all third party sales & distribution; ending rental plan in DE

Peloton has announced that they will be ending direct sales in Germany. This applies to the Peloton Bike, Bike+, and Tread (which are currently the only products available in Germany).

Instead, people interested in purchasing Peloton hardware in Germany will be sent to one of Peloton’s third party partners to make their purchases. At time of publishing, these partners are FitShop and Amazon. This means Peloton will be using only 3PL (third-party logistics) in both Germany & Austria.

Until now, People has offered direct sales in Germany – meaning you can go to the Peloton website, purchase a Peloton device, and Peloton’s contractors would deliver it to your house in Germany.

Starting sometime in September – this will no longer be the case. Peloton’s German website will still contain information about the various products, but when you are ready to purchase, you will be sent to either FitShop or Amazon in Germany to make the purchase and schedule delivery. The Bike & Bike+ will be available on Amazon, while the Bike, Bike+, and Tread will be available via FitShop.

Peloton notes that they will continue to have a customer support team to help German members who buy products from third party partners:

Peloton will offer Member support services to its German Members, whether product has been rented from Peloton or purchased through Fitshop or Amazon. The manufacturer’s warranty on all Peloton products purchased in Germany and Austria will continue.

As part of this, Peloton will also be ending their rental program in Germany. Peloton had already quietly stopped renting the original Bike in Germany in August – this is just making that official. The company did state that they would honor contracts through the end of the rental term for anyone who has previously made a rental.

In addition, since Peloton will no longer be making sales through their own website, they will no longer be offering refurbished bikes available for sale.

This new sales method – where all sales are made through third party partners – is the same model Peloton launched with in Austria last year.

Peloton has been closing their showrooms in Germany as part of a global reduction in their retail footprint which began at the end of 2022.

In a statement, Peloton tried to assure members that their German content and support isn’t going away entirely. They said:

Peloton continues to invest in hardware, software, content and the Peloton Member experience. With more than 8,000 on-demand German classes, and live classes taught by German speaking Instructors, Peloton’s German and Austrian community can access an expanding variety of content spanning 16 fitness disciplines from cycling, running and strength to yoga, meditation and pilates, available anytime, anywhere on Peloton Bike, Bike+, Tread and the Peloton App which is available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

As a reminder, Peloton’s German language classes are recorded out of Peloton Studios London along with their UK team.

This news comes roughly one year after Peloton’s initial partnership with FitShop (who were known as Sport-Tiedje at the time), and almost 22 months after partnering with Amazon in Germany.
