New Peloton Patent Application Published for New Ways to Control Bike & Row with Buttons & Controls on Handlebars/Handles

A new Peloton patent application has been published that depicts controls and buttons on the handlebars of the Bike & Row. This news was first shared by Bob Treemore via Twitter.

Patent application number WO2023059522 was published on April 13, 2023. Titled, “Handle Controls Systems and Methods for Exercise Equipment,” the abstract reads:

Various techniques are provided adjusting user controls in exercise equipment. In one example, a method includes receiving data from output circuitry associated with one or more sensors coupled to one or more handle control systems positioned on a handlebar of an exercise apparatus, processing the data to identify one or more adjustments to be implemented on the exercise apparatus, and providing one or more commands to one or more adjustment mechanisms to implement the one or more identified adjustments. The one or more handle control systems are positioned on the handlebar of the exercise apparatus at a position that allows the user to actuate the resistance knob control without moving the user’s hands. Additional methods and systems are also provided.

In other words, if these controls were eventually implemented, members could adjust the resistance on a Peloton Bike without actually having to reach down and turn the existing knob.

This is just one example of actions that could be taken via controls on the handlebars of a Peloton hardware device. Throughout the patent application, convenience and navigation are often used as the reasoning behind incorporating buttons and controls on the handlebars.

In addition to simple controls, another potential implementation shows an entire control module with a small display that could rest on the handlebars as well.

Before the Row launched in the fall of 2022, we shared that the handle may have controls and buttons – allowing the user to take certain actions during class (while rowing) without removing their hands from the handle. These actions would potentially include adjusting the volume, giving out high-fives, navigating the leaderboard, and more. However, it was later revealed that the initial iteration of the device would not have controls or buttons.

This latest patent suggests that Peloton is not only considering adding controls to the Row, but to the Bike as well.

However, it is important to note that just because a patent is filed or awarded does not mean that the feature or product will ever be brought to market.

Special shoutout to Bob Treemore for highlighting this news. Would you like to see controls and buttons on your Peloton hardware device? If so, what would you like to see those features do?
