New shipping / restocking fee for Peloton Apparel online returns

Peloton has quietly added a new “restocking fee” for returns of online apparel orders. Now, any online return of an apparel order will be charged a new Peloton apparel restocking fee of $9.

Previously, there was no fee for returns – or no extra return shipping cost.

The updated Peloton apparel return policy reads:

Any items purchased online or in-store items may be returned for a full refund within 30 days of the original purchase date. There will be an $9 restocking fee for all mail-in returns. Please note that due to how quickly our inventory moves we are unable to offer exchanges.

The phrasing of this makes it seem like a possible workaround would be to take online orders back to a showroom in order to process your refund. However, there have already been mixed reports on this, with some saying that showrooms would also charge a restocking fee to process a refund for an order that was originally made online.

At this time, it does still seem like apparel orders made in person at a showroom, and then returned in person at a showroom, would not be charged the restocking fee.

The return policy calls it a restocking fee – however, the return page itself doesn’t label it as restocking fee. Instead, it gives the indication this is more along the lines of a shipping cost (since the items are being sent back by FedEx) – and this is Peloton no longer providing free shipping on returns. However, Peloton’s support page does specifically call this a “restocking fee”, not a “shipping fee.”

The math shown on the return page, showing what your total refund amount is, does not appear to be correctly factoring in the deduction of the new restocking fee at this time.

The new Peloton apparel restocking fee is per return – not per item. This means if you return multiple items from the same order, you’ll be charged the same $9 as if you returned a single item.

This change also appears to be effective immediately – no matter when you made your apparel order. In other words – even if you made an apparel order 7 days ago, before this new restocking fee policy went into effect – you will still be charge the new $9 fee to do your return. It may be possible for manual exceptions to made somehow, but the automated return website is enforcing this new restocking fee across the board.

This is the second small change made to Peloton Apparel in recent months. In August, the free shipping threshold was increased to $75 – up from the previous $50 mark.

Will this new restocking fee for returned Peloton apparel orders impact your decision to order items from Peloton apparel?

I have made so many Peloton Apparel purchases over the past five years – most of the time if I’m unsure on a size I will order two and return the incorrect size to my nearest showroom. It’s nice to know I can easily return something I can’t see in person before purchasing.

This time, I ordered some shorts that fit really weirdly, and when i went back to the store to return them, I was told I can no longer do it there! The Peloton return portal is clunky and kept saying my order didn’t exist (it seems like it was wanting a Zip Code, but I’m in Canada), and my emails to support@ went ignored. SUPER frustrating, and this will likely be my last Peloton Apparel order.

I finally got past the Chat Bot “Support chat” and to a real human who agreed to send me a label when I sent them a screen capture of my unanswered emails. I have to go to a FedEx store and THEN I have to follow up with them once I see the tracking number has been marked as arrived, and request the refund. No mention of the $9 fee, but who knows, that might be an infuriating surprise for me when my return is finally processed.

Seems strange when most other companies are trying to make it easier to return clothes purchased online, that Peloton would want to make it so much harder. It used to be so much easier to go to the store (five minutes! And I’d usually buy something else while I was in there!!) They’ve lost my business!
