Peloton Removes Public Sessions Feature (“Invite Friends” Sessions / “Ride with Friends” Still Available)

Peloton has quietly removed the public version of its “Sessions” feature, which allowed members to join automatically generated group rides with others starting a class at the same time.

Note that this change leaves in place the “Invite Friends” option, so members can still schedule and coordinate Sessions with their own groups. However, the option to join a public Session is no longer available.

As a refresher, Peloton’s Sessions feature has worked in two major ways over the past few years. First, there are Public Sessions, which are automatically created by Peloton for new and popular classes, allowing members to hop in and join strangers who were starting at the same point. Second, there are Invite Friends Sessions, which are classes scheduled by members with invites sent to a specific group of friends to join at the same time, creating a shared leaderboard experience.

As of last week, the public Sessions are gone. Members on social media began asking about the disappearance, with one person posting in the Official Peloton Member Facebook Page (OPP) inquiring why they didn’t see any sessions available to take.

Peloton responded directly, with a comment clarifying that Peloton had removed the public sessions feature – but kept the invite sessions. They said:

“Previously Members could interact with Sessions in two ways: either by joining a public, automatically generated Session or by joining a Session created through the Invite Friends feature. We have decided to stop generating the public Sessions but Sessions can still be created through invites.”

The Sessions feature first debuted in 2020, allowing members to join smaller, time-synced leaderboards for on-demand classes. In 2021, Peloton integrated Sessions with the Scheduling tool, making it easier for friends and teams to plan group classes.

The Sessions feature was ultimately a central part of Peloton’s push to make on-demand classes feel more like live ones, with a real-time leaderboard and a sense of community.

This is not the first time Peloton has removed features from devices. In the past, the company has removed video chat through hardware device screens, the “Your Tags” filter on the leaderboard, and Apple GymKit support for certain classes on the Bike+ – though GymKit was later restored after community pushback.

For now, members who enjoy riding “together” in real-time will need to coordinate using the Invite Friends tool – meaning public Sessions are officially a thing of the past.

What are your thoughts on this recent change to Peloton’s Sessions feature?

I never really understood or used “sessions” anyway. Why get in a session riding with strangers when you are already riding in a class with strangers? I won’t miss it.

I loved sessions…used them all the time because it was hard for me to participate in live rides with my favorite instructors due to my schedule. This gave me the feel of a live class while being able to ride with my favorite Peloton instructors. I am very disappointed they removed this feature. It’s the second thing they’ve removed in the last six months (also removed the Programs feature from the TV app) that has really bummed me out.
