Peloton’s Programs to be Updated & Revamped (With More Flexibility); and Will Be Removed from Web & TV

Peloton is rolling out major updates to its Programs feature this month – changes that they maintain are designed to improve the overall experience, but with a few surprising limitations.

UpdateThe updated Peloton programs are now live. You can see details here.

The revamp will go live on June 13, with all Programs temporarily unavailable on June 12 as Peloton transitions to the new system.

According to Peloton, the updates are in response to member feedback. The company teased the change with a message stating: “We’ve heard your feedback and agree that they could be even better, so we’re making a few changes to give you the best experience possible.”

While the details of the updated Programs structure have not yet been officially released, we expect Peloton to introduce long-requested flexibility – and they have teased that as being one of the changes.

Currently, Peloton’s Programs require members to follow a strict schedule and class order. Members are required to take classes within the program sequentially and within the designated time frame. In other words, if you start a seven day program on Monday that contains three classes, you must take the classes in order to unlock the next class; and you must complete the three classes by the end of the day Sunday.

Peloton will be updating their programs later this month.

If members miss a workout or fall behind – even by a single day – they are essentially forced to start over entirely. This has been one of the most frequent complaints about Peloton’s Programs.

Though nothing is confirmed, it is highly likely Peloton will implement a system that allows members to make up missed classes or continue through a Program at their own pace, even if that means losing “official” progress or streaks. This would make Programs more accessible for people with busy schedules, travel plans, or unexpected interruptions.

In an email to some members about the change, they said “we will be introducing new features soon that make Programs more flexible for your needs and schedule.”

However, as part of the update, Peloton is removing the ability to take Programs via the web browser and on “smart TVs”. Peloton has not provided a specific list of what smart TV apps will be removed yet. However, members who used apps like Roku, AppleTV, and FireSticks have reported getting emails today notifying them of this upcoming change and that they will be losing access – making it appear that all TV-based apps will be removing access next week. In addition to the TV apps, those who took programs through a desktop web browser (or mobile browser on a phone) are also losing access to programs. Moving forward, Programs will only be available through the Peloton digital app or on Peloton hardware devices like the Bike/Bike+, Tread/Tread+, Row, and presumably the Guide as well.

Peloton notes that if you are currently in progress on a Program using a TV app, you will be able to pick it back up on the app without losing your place.

For those who enjoy taking Programs on a larger television screen, Peloton suggests two workarounds. Members can cast from the app to their TV using AirPlay or Chromecast; or they can use stacked classes by adding program workouts to their stack via the app, then launching the stack from the TV app.

Peloton has not yet provided a full list of changes, but given the timing and scope of the update, it is clear that this is likely to be more than a minor adjustment. With the flexibility overhaul likely on the way, members can expect a more user-friendly and forgiving Programs experience – though with the new limits on access, it is likely that not every user will be thrilled.

Note that Peloton previously revamped their programs back in 2021 with what they called “Programs 2.0,” an announcement that was made during the annual Homecoming weekend.

I wish I could search and filter for specific programs. Scrolling is not searching and it takes awhile to find them.

  • Patti Jacobs says:

Will we still have classes available on June 12 so we can maintain our streaks?

  • Bryanna says:

I hope they list the exercise and reps and use timer similar to the strength+ app. A lot of programs are designed to be taken 4-8 weeks straight, and I’ve never been able to stick to it due to being annoyed with the same lines and music every day. I’d be so much more motivated taking the classes once, then subsequent weeks being able to listen to my own music and doing it sans constant repetitive coaching. Oh and being able to plug in our weights and reps would be nice

  • Peloton Mine says:

This sucks! I do all my classes on a big screen with a Fire TV stick. They should have given a 30day notice at least.

  • Mike says:

This is going to alienate many customers – especially those with bikes located in small rooms were floor exercises are not possible. This is bad for the customer. I suspect this is all about driving sales of their hardware. Peloton should be ashamed of themselves

  • Amber says:

I agree with Peloton Mine. I take all my classes via my Roku and HATE that they are now forcing me to cast via google.

  • Sue says:

Then they should allow me to use my Bike+ screen to cast Tread classes to the TV. Casting from a mobile device to the TV is not an enjoyable experience.

  • Pelobee says:

I am not happy with this “upgrade.” All I wanted was a filter but instead they made it harder to do floor exercises on the floor. Additionally, since the change I can’t seem to cast on my TLC Roku TV. At least the stacking function works. But please, bring it back to the app, I already have a bike.

  • Ron says:

EVERY PELOTON CUSTOMER should be bombarding their customer service email and voicing their displeasure with this change taking away the ability to use the peloton app on a tv or laptop.

This is a horrible move and will alienate a lot of customers.
