Power Zones on a Peloton Bike.

Bug with Peloton Power Zone FTP Settings on Peloton Bike For Some Members

After a recent software update, Peloton appears to be experiencing a bug with FTP (functional threshold power), which related to power zone classes.

Update – Peloton has now posted an outage, and said the issue is resolved. They said: “A fix has been implemented for an issue that members saw after manually entering their FTP leading to incorrect FTP values. We are monitoring the results.”

Some members who have manually populated their FTP in their profile may have noticed changes in their power zones in recent days, even though they have not made any changes to their FTP in their settings, or taken a new FTP test – which is normally the only reason someone’s zones would change.

For those unfamiliar, FTP is what Peloton uses to calculate a members’ zones used during a Power Zone ride. There are a number of FTP classes available that members can use to discover their FTP; at the end of the class, Peloton will automatically add your FTP to your profile so that you have your correct zones in every future class.

Alternatively, you can take the average output from any 20 minute class, and manually enter that into your Peloton profile on the Bike. Peloton will then multiply that by 95% and use that number to set your FTP. This then identifies your power zones and corresponds to your zones shown on the Bike in all future rides.

However, some members who manually input their FTP have noticed changes to their zones in recent days following the latest software update. In other words, their zone numbers on the Bike are lower than they were previously. It appears the software update took members’ FTP – which was already multiplied by 95% – and multiplied it by 95% again, resulting in the numbers being lower than they should be.

Update: Other members have reported it reverted their FTP value to the value from a previous FTP test (not their most current).

This issue appears to be affecting many members, as indicated by this Reddit thread, as well as posts across many Facebook groups.

As of publishing time Peloton has not publicly acknowledged the issue by creating an official incident report on the status page.

One member shared that they contacted Peloton Support, and were informed that Peloton is aware of the issue and is working on a fix. We will share details on a potential resolution as they become available. For now, a potential workaround for those impacted is to navigate back to your profile and manually re-enter your average output from your 20 minute test ride – which will then set your FTP back to the correct number.

Earlier this month, Peloton added a new feature for power zone riders – which was the ability for the Bike+ to auto-adjust your resistance during power zone rides.

If you’re a Bike owner, have you noticed a change in your previously identified power zones in recent days?

Yes, this issue affected me this week. I took a 60 minute Power Zone class on Monday and adjusting my resistance to get into the appropriate zone just about killed me. I knew something was wrong, just not exactly what.
