Patent filing more evidence for Peloton Rower?

A patent related to an indoor rower was filed on January 3rd, 2018 and granted on July 4th, 2019. Why is this significant? Because the company who filed the application for the patent was Tonic Fitness Technology – the same company that was acquired last month by Peloton.

The patent itself is not for an entirely new rower. It relates specifically to how the cable would rewind after a pull was completed – due to an elastic band wrapped around a pulley. One of the main benefits to Peloton/Tonic’s approach according to the patent is to make assembly easier and manufacturing costs lower. Although the images contained in the patent do not show the trademark large screens the Peloton community is used to, there are plenty of spots it could be attached in future designs (and wouldn’t necessarily have to be shown as part of this patent application).

It is worth noting that just because a patent was filed does not mean that the product will definitely be made & become Peloton’s next new product. That said, if and when Peloton releases a rowing machine, they will have the interesting position of not being first to market. Hydrow has released an well-reviewed indoor rower with a growing library of live classes, and an active community. Given Hydrow has a head start in the rowing market, Peloton might be forced to price a potential rower more competitively than they otherwise would.

I really hope this is not the design they actually go with. This is not a premium product, or even an average product, compared to the Concept 2 (my favorite) or the Water Rower. Given that they’re undoubtedly going to try and charge a premium price, the entire experience (not just the classes/interactivity) has to be premium

I hope Peloton recognizes the potential behind the devoted Concept 2 rowers all over the world. I have been using a Concept 2 for 10 years. I have also been using a Peloton bike for about 2 years. I really like what Peloton offers regarding workout diversity with new training sessions on a regular basis. Peloton’s songs always help pass the time and generate energy. Their user metrics and profile history are exceptional.

The Concept 2 Erg rower is an extraordinary piece of hardware: it is well designed, durable, and affordable. It gives a great workout. What is missing is what Peloton has the potential to deliver: focused training, regular varied times and styles for workout sessions, and coaching for user improvement.

Concept 2 rowing communities exist all over the world. Many of us compete virtually on line. Other competitions and trainings are sponsored in group gatherings. Many events are connected virtually over the internet. This has been a standard for as long as I have been using the inside rower. Changes offered by Peloton communities, its leader boards, metric history and active training would be the first things that Concept 2 users might recognize right away. How about if Peloton let them workout on their existing rowers, and just join in on training sessions with a subscription? This would be a great initial bridge to offer new rowers as a transition.

If Peloton wants to sell a rower, I will buy it. It just has to be affordable, durable, and something that can be put away like my Concept 2 that separates into 2 pieces, and stands in the corner when not being used. I am willing to pay more for a Peloton rower given that the interactive screen is there.

I enjoy both Peloton and Concept 2, but I am hungry for a change on my rower. I really hope that Peloton can step up and provide us with what Concept 2 cannot: a grade-A modern, progressive training tool that eliminates the monotony of inside rowing and allows me to train like I do with their other programs.
