Peloton Sued by Mississippi Woman After Injury From Peloton Bike Seat Slipping & Falling

A woman from Harrison County, Mississippi recently filed a lawsuit suing Peloton and “seeking an unspecified amount of damages” from an injury she allegedly sustained from her Peloton Bike.

Yolanda Crawford bought her Peloton Bike in May 2021 and is suing both Peloton and RXO (the delivery company formerly known as XPO) over her injuries.

It was reported that Crawford bought her bike for about $1500, so it’s assumed she purchased the original Peloton Bike rather than the Bike+. Upon having her bike delivered, an employee with RXO instructed Crawford to watch online videos to learn how to adjust the bike’s seat and handlebars. The employee may have been referring to the “Peloton 101” short instructional videos that are available on the Bike for members to review the proper bike setup and cycling form.

Crawford reported that later the same day of her bike delivery, the bike’s handlebars “collapsed into their support column.” She called Peloton and was told that someone would reach out to her.

However, she then used the bike the next day and alleges that “the bike seat collapsed to its base with a loud noise, throwing plaintiff off the bike and into a wall.” Crawford received an injury to her lower back and sought medical treatment at a local hospital.

According to the report, it sounds as if the bike seat dropped all the way down while Crawford was on it. This does not sound like the same issue as the 2023 Peloton bike seat post recall involving certain models of Peloton Bike seat posts completely snapping off from the bike. In that recall, Peloton sent out free replacement seat posts to the affected members to self-install.

Instead, this sounds like a more widespread problem that some Peloton bike owners experience. This is where the bike seat will just gradually (or suddenly) lower from where the member has set it – also known as the bike seat post slipping – even though the knob for setting the seat post position had been fully tightened.

Peloton and RXO have reportedly not yet responded to Crawford’s lawsuit.
