Changes at Peloton Studios: Peloton Now Checking IDs & Using Cell Phones for Waitlist Notifications

Members who have attended or are interested in attending in-person classes at Peloton Studios should be advised of numerous small but important changes that have recently been put in place. Note that for now these changes have only been implemented at Peloton Studios New York (PSNY), but Peloton is planning to enforce them at Peloton Studios London (PSL) in the future as well.

First, PSNY staff are now checking photo identification for individuals who have booked in-studio classes. Previously IDs were not screened – which meant that you could unofficially check in as someone else to take a class. This is no longer the case.

In recent weeks Peloton has added language to the list of disclaimers that are sent to members who have successfully booked in-person classes. The new bullet reads:

Peloton Studios will ask members for ID to confirm the booking name on check in, this is for health and safety and to confirm the member meets the age requirements for the modality, please remember to bring this!

Over this past weekend (July 6-10), Peloton began enforcing the procedure at PSNY. We’ve received several reports that members attempted to check in for an in-person class, but their name on their ID did not match the name on their class reservation. They were turned away, and their spots were given to individuals on the waitlist.

It is worth noting that Peloton’s official policy, which has been in place from the grand studio reopening nearly a year ago, is that booked classes cannot be transferred to someone else ahead of time. We’ve received varying reports over time – some members have been able to transfer a booked class to another member, while others were told they would need to cancel their reservation and instruct their friend to attempt to grab the waitlist spot that would inevitably open up.

In addition, there has been a small change to the waitlist process at Peloton Studios. Previously waitlisted members were given an electronic buzzer – similar to what you might be given while waiting for a table at a restaurant – and if you lucked out with a waitlist spot, the buzzer was activated and this is how you’d know you secured an official spot.

Peloton has recently removed the electronic buzzers and are now using cell phones to notify waitlisted members of an open spot. Furthermore, Peloton is now randomizing the waitlist for the period immediately before the class begins. When the studio first reopened members who were on the waitlist and walked into the studios, as well as members who were not in the waitlist but attempted to do standby, were selected for any open spots in the class on a first come, first served basis. However, the process is now that Peloton will randomly select who is given any last minute openings – it is no longer first come first serve.

As a reminder, PSL will be closed from August 7 through September 22. The closure is to provide Peloton an opportunity to perform renovations and maintenance work. You can read more details via our overview article.
