Free Mode is officially back on the Peloton platform, and the return was announced directly to members via an on-device popup for some owners of the Peloton Tread+. Although the Free Mode feature only exists on Peloton Tread+, the classes can still be taken by owners of the regular Tread, or via the Peloton app.
The announcement read:
Unleash next level endurance with Free Mode
With Free Mode, you can power the belt with your muscles for a more challenging run. Filter our On-Demand library for Free Mode classes and jump in! New classes added regularly.

Free Mode is a distinctive capability exclusive to the Peloton Tread+, which allows members to disengage the motor and manually power the belt using their own strength. It is a more advanced, self-driven workout experience that challenges users to tap into their full-body power and endurance.
This update marks the official comeback of Free Mode classes for the first time since 2021.
To mark the return, Peloton dropped three new “Extra 10: Free Mode” classes today:
- Extra 10: Free Mode Run – Matty Maggiacomo – 6/11/25 @ 10:00am ET
- Extra 10: Free Mode Run – Matt Wilpers – 6/11/25 @ 10:00am ET
- Extra 10: Free Mode Run – Andy Speer – 6/11/25 @ 10:00am ET
In addition, two new regular classes released today – a 20 minute Hip Hop Run with Marcel Dinkins and a 15 minute HIIT Run with Andy Speer – also include Free Mode segments. This indicates that Free Mode will not be limited to classes explicitly labeled as such, and can be included in any Peloton running class.
For those members with a regular Tread, trying to take one of the classes with free mode (whether it be the Extra 10, or one of the regular ones) will result in an alert message notifying you that you can still take it, but to be aware of the Free mode portions.

It reads:
You might hear your instructor mention Free Mode which is only available on Tread+. You can still participate by adjusting your speed during this part of the workout.
A new class filter has also been added to Tread+ devices, allowing members to easily find any classes that incorporate Free Mode. Selecting the filter will pull up the entire library of available Free Mode workouts.

Peloton has confirmed that Free Mode classes will now be added on a regular basis, so members can expect more content featuring this format in the future.
Peloton has also added a new icon when viewing details about a class, giving another visual indicator that the class contains Free Mode.

We previously reported that the return of Free Mode might be on the horizon after a member spotted a class listing titled “Extra 10: Free Mode Run” with instructor Matty Maggiacomo in the queue at Peloton Studios New York (PSNY). This was one of the classes released on June 11.
