During Peloton’s recent earnings call, interim CEO Chris Bruzzo dropped an intriguing hint about a potential upcoming feature: virtual coaching.
Bruzzo was asked by an investor: “Does anything stand out in particular in terms of what your most excited about in go-to-market initiatives?” In response, Bruzzo stated:
“We’ll continue to look for those opportunities. And I think there’s lots available to Peloton going forward. And some of what’s happening in the product organization around software innovation is pretty exciting. There is so much room to get to greater and greater personalization in the experience for our members, things like virtual coaching, helping getting them to the right workouts for them, lots of opportunity there.”
In other words, Bruzzo specifically mentioned virtual coaching as a promising avenue for innovation – as it relates to software. Though not entirely clear at this time, this could come in the form of a virtual coach within the Peloton app, with the potential to offer tailored recommendations and guidance to optimize members’ workout experiences.
Peloton has been investing heavily in personalization, with former Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy taking his learnings on personalization from Spotify & Netflix and trying to use it to highlight classes relevant to each individual user. Virtual coaching, or AI coaching, would be another way for Peloton to personalize the experience for their users.

At its core, virtual coaching could manifest as an interactive chatbot or digital assistant embedded within the Peloton app. Leveraging advanced AI capabilities, this virtual coach would have access to members’ workout histories, preferences, and performance metrics. Armed with this data, the virtual coach could offer personalized recommendations for workouts tailored to each member’s unique goals, preferences, and fitness levels.
Imagine logging into the Peloton app and being greeted by your virtual coach, who suggests the perfect workout based on your recent activity, favorite instructors, and musical tastes. Whether you’re in the mood for an intense HIIT session, a scenic ride, or a rejuvenating yoga flow, your virtual coach would curate a selection of classes tailored to your needs and interests.
But virtual coaching could extend beyond workout recommendations. Peloton could leverage this technology to provide personalized fitness tips, motivation, and support to members in real-time. Whether you’re seeking advice on proper form, nutrition tips, or motivation to crush your fitness goals, your virtual coach would be there to guide and support you every step of the way.
While Peloton has already begun integrating AI-driven recommendations into its platform through features like the Weekly Workout plan in the Guide, the introduction of virtual coaching would represent a significant leap forward in personalized fitness experiences – as it is much more interactive and could provide personalized guidance and support.
It would also get much more widespread use among the Peloton community – since it wouldn’t be restricted to only those who own the Peloton Guide hardware.
Beyond the app, this could also roll out to Peloton hardware devices in unique ways as well.
