In recent months, Peloton has made a small upgrade to the software on their in-studio hardware. This includes the Peloton Bikes, Treads, and Rows.
Previously, while taking a class in studio, there was no way to connect any device as a heart rate monitor. It didn’t matter whether you tried connecting a bluetooth heart rate monitor, or an Ant+ heart rate monitor – the Peloton devices in studio would not make any connections.
Recently, Peloton has upgraded the software so that some smart watches can now be used as heart rate monitors in studio.

To connect, members simply need to open the Peloton app on their smart watch (such as the Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, etc) , after they have logged onto their profile on the Peloton Bike, Tread, or Row.
After opening the Peloton App on the watch, the screen on the Peloton Bike, Tread, or Row will update, and add an extra display field for your heart rate towards the bottom of the screen.
It shows you your actual heart rate, a graphical representation of your heart rate zone, as well as what % of your max heart rate you are at.

This is supported on the Peloton Bikes, Treads, and Rows at the Peloton Studios.
As you might expect, in addition to simply displaying the heart rate data while riding, it is also recorded to your workout, and available post-class in your workout data just like any other class you might have taken at home while using a heart rate data.

This has been confirmed to be work with using Apple Watches as a heart rate monitor in the studio. Owners of Samsung Galaxy watches have also reported being able to connect to the studio devices as well.
Note that your phone can not be in airplane mode for this to work – you will need to be connected to a cell signal or Peloton’s wifi network. Peloton staff can provide members with login information to their wifi networks as needed.
Update – This article originally only talked about Apple Watch support. It has since been confirmed & updated to also work with Samsung Galaxy watches.
