Earlier today, it was reported by CNBC that that Hydrow is acquiring Speede Fitness. This move comes as “gymgoers move away from cardio exercises in favor of weights.”
As part of that report, CNBC spoke with Hydrow and covered a number of topics.
While Hydrow was giving the reporter some background and history on the company, it came to light that Peloton had tried to acquire Hydrow a number of years ago – but Hydrow declined. This acquisition attempt came before Peloton released their own rower (the Peloton Row).
Peloton first officially announced the Peloton Row in May 2022 during their virtual Peloton Homecoming event.

Hydrow gave the following context to CNBC regarding the acquisition attempt.
Peloton tried to acquire Hydrow rather than build its own rowing machine, but the company declined, [Hydrow] told CNBC.
CNBC then tried to reach Peloton for comment, but did not receive a reply.
Presumably, had Peloton acquired Hydrow, Peloton would have re-released the Hydrow device(s) as Peloton Rowers and sold those instead.
It’s not clear how many of the Hydrow instructors may have transitioned over to being Peloton instructors had the aqusition taken place.
In more recent Peloton news, CNBC also reported earlier this week that there are one or more private equity firms considering taking Peloton private – following the news last week that Peloton is undergoing another restructuring and Barry McCarthy has left as CEO.
