In Episode 1, “Ways to Live Better Longer” which is available to watch now on YouTube, both Matt and Dr. Patel explained why the topic of longevity as it relates to health and wellness is so important to each of them.

Dr. Patel shared that throughout her medical practice, she has seen so many cases of preventable injury or chronic illness where exercise and other healthy habits could have made an impact.

As for Matt, he announced about a month ago the birth of his first child. Matt shared,

“As a new dad, this is a super important subject to me because I not only want to be around as my kid gets older, but I also want to play an active role in his life and demonstrate what a healthy lifestyle looks like.”

Matt also shared more of what listeners can expect from Peloton’s new podcast: “We peel back the layers of our in-class programming, and we talk about the science behind fitness,” discussing how fitness impacts longevity.

Episode 1 investigated discussion around questions such as:

  • What is longevity, and why is it so important?
  • How much of a role do genes play into someone’s longevity? In other words, how much is outside and in your control? (Fun fact: research shows genes account for about 25% of your health, so “75% of longevity is in your control”!)
  • What kind of data should people track to optimize their longevity? (e.g., markers such as heart rate variability and VO2 max)
  • Why should people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s think about longevity?

Matt also made a plug about Peloton’s new “Move for Life” program, a 4-week longevity program designed to have members start off slowly and build up to the research-recommended amount of cardio and strength each week.

It isn’t clear how often Peloton’s podcast will drop new episodes. We do know the topic of episode 2 will be centered around exercise and how it impacts our lifespan, including the differences in cardio versus strength, all supported by peer-reviewed research.

You can also find each episode’s relevant scientific studies in the episode show notes.
