Peloton Instructors Step Off the Bike and Tread during Peloton Classes at PSNY (Tunde Oyeneyin, Jenn Sherman, and Kirsten Ferguson)

This past weekend, Peloton members tuning into classes were treated to a unexpected experience at PSNY: as instructors Tunde Oyeneyin, Jenn Sherman, and Kirsten Ferguson stepped off the Bike and Tread as classes were still in progress to coach some from the member audience.

This took place in two classes which were held this past weekend: one took place on the tread, where Kirsten and Jenn Sherman led a 30-minute Epic Sing-Along Walk in celebration of Women’s History Month. This was already a unique class as it was Jenn Sherman’s first class on the Tread as a special appearance. The other class was on the bike, a 30-minute Tunde Oyeneyin Intervals & Arms ride on March 21st.

In both of these classes, the instructors stopped riding or walking – and left their device mid-class to engage with members in the studio. For the bike class, Tunde actually hopped on an empty bike alongside members for part of the class, while in the Tread class, both Kirsten & Jenn joined in by singing and dancing next to the members on their equipment. While this has happened unofficially once or twice in the past at NYC, this was a “sanctioned” occurrence, with Peloton having pre-planned this with a steady-cam operator in the studio and pre-planned sections for these off-device interactions to take place.

This approach of having instructors temporarily leave their device was first experimented with in London last year. In December 2024, Bradley Rose and Leanne Hainsby-Alldis did similar appearances off-bike. Since then, there have been a few other weekends in London when instructors had similar segments in their classes.

Tunde’s ride began with a her starting from the back row of the studio, with the steadicam following her as she explained the class format. (The regular format for 99.9% of classes is the instructor is already on the Bike or Tread as the pre-show begins).

As the camera followed her every move, Tunde made her way to the instructor platform, mounting her bike to kick off the ride. Ten minutes into the ride, Tunde called out a member celebrating their birthday and danced her way to the bike next to them which had been left empty so Tunde could join in the middle of class. The camera followed her, capturing the excitement as members kept in step with her, smiling along.

Tunde danced, encouraged, and interacted with the members, creating a high-energy and joyful atmosphere. As she exited the bike, Tunde danced up to the camera with her signature smile and then glided back to her podium bike.

As the ride neared the end, Tunde instructed everyone to stay clipped in and then moved into the audience again, telling them, “I’m coming out to you!” The energy in the room was electrified as she engaged with the riders, motivating them to push harder. Her direct presence on the floor brought a deeper connection, with members feeling more encouraged to give their best effort. Tunde’s ability to move from her podium bike to the floor created a sense of unity and excitement. As the class came to an end, she remounted her bike for the final weights session, seamlessly blending motivation with movement.

The weekend also featured a special Sing-Along class that utilized the steadycam to capture some unique moments moment which featured both Jenn Sherman & Kirsten Ferguson on the Tread. The studio was set up differently than usual, with the treads positioned in a staggered formation and two treads on the instructor platform for the pair, reminiscent of Matty and Olivia’s Two-for-One Wicked class.

The two instructors started the class on the treads and immediately encouraged members to sing along to the songs they knew. While Jenn is no stranger to singing with fellow instructors during her Sing-Along rides, including her ride from this weekend which took place hours before her class on the Tread, this marked her first time leading a class on the tread.

After giving safety instructions and introductions, the singing began, and Jenn jumped off the tread twice, fully in her element, as she found her voice and back-up singers among the members. She danced around the studio as members walked along, singing with her. The steadicam provided excellent angles, showcasing the pure joy shared by both the instructors and the participants—like a concert come to life.

Kirsten also took to the floor just at the right moment when Beyoncé’s music took over the airwaves. Kirsten’s dancing skills brought an extra level of excitement as she interacted with special guests Callie Gullickson and Ash Pryor, fellow instructors in the class who were working out alongside members, joining in the fun with their own dance moves and singing.

What did you think of this type of class filming? Do you like it when the instructor is engaging with the audience? Or do you prefer they stay on the equipment?

While I understand that this is something new and novel for Peloton, this is a tale as old as time for spin classes in general. I’m sorry, but parlor tricks like this aren’t making up for the dearth of available live classes on the platform.
