Peloton instructors have recently introduced in-ear monitors (IEM) during classes, marking a change in their setup at both Peloton Studios New York (PSNY) and Peloton Studios London (PSL).
Peloton instructor Marcel Maurer provided a detailed look at this new feature through an Instagram post, writing:
BTS: Have you noticed the better sound during our workouts this year? Over the last few months, the team behind us instructors has been working hard to develop individual in-ear monitors with us. As you can see: I was skeptical at the beginning 🤣🫣🤭

Other Peloton instructors have also posted a few behind the scenes looks at in-ear monitor fittings, which took place over the previous few months. The adoption of in-ear monitors appears to serve two primary functions.
First, providing an enhanced audio experience. The monitors allow instructors to hear the music more clearly without it being overpoweringly loud in the studio. This reduces sound spill into their microphones, creating a cleaner audio experience for at-home members. In situations where there are no in-studio members, the music volume could potentially be turned down significantly, as instructors rely on their in-ear monitors instead.
Next, it can allow for real-time communication. The in-ear monitors can facilitate direct communication between instructors and the control room. Previously, communication took place via typed messages displayed on the instructor’s tablet – which instructors occasionally acknowledge during the class itself. This new system will likely allow for more seamless and immediate interaction, which could help in managing technical aspects of live classes.

This technological upgrade are part of Peloton’s ongoing efforts to improve both production quality and the instructor experience. As more instructors continue adopting in-ear monitors, Peloton is likely hoping to create a more refined and engaging class environment.
