Former Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy Joins Strava Board of Directors

Former Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy has landed a new role in the connected fitness and technology space, recently joining the board of directors at Strava.

Strava announced the appointment on January 9, adding McCarthy to its board as the company continues a period of rapid growth and reportedly prepares for a potential public offering (IPO).

In announcing the board appointment, Strava CEO Michael Martin highlighted McCarthy’s experience guiding consumer technology platforms through periods of transformation, noting the company’s ambition to build a durable, long-term global brand.

McCarty provided the below statement regarding the appointment via press release:

“Strava is the category-defining platform for fitness. As the world’s largest community of active people, I believe its proven ability to motivate a global audience is unmatched. With exceptional growth among Gen Z and Millennials, and sustained engagement among Gen X and Boomer audiences, Strava has built a product designed to endure.”

The timing of McCarthy’s appointment is notable, as Strava is widely rumored to be preparing for an initial public offering. According to a recent Reuters article, Strava has confidentially filed IPO paperwork in recent weeks, with a potential offering as soon as this spring. Reuters also reported that Strava was valued at approximately $2.2 billion in a funding round completed in May, led by Sequoia Capital alongside existing investors.

McCarthy joined Peloton as CEO in February 2022 and served in the role until May of 2024. When Peloton announced his departure, they also revealed another round of layoffs. After a monthslong search, Peter Stern was appointed as CEO and began his tenure on January 1, 2025.
