Matt Wilpers & Peloton Shares Strength Training Tips for Runners During the Winter Months

With most of North America & Europe currently in the thick of winter, Peloton recently shared tips around winter strength training, specifically for runners. Since most races happen during the warmer months, the winter season is an excellent time to focus on building strength.

In a YouTube video and accompanying Peloton blog post, instructor Matt Wilpers shared practical advice on how to adapt training routines during colder weather, emphasizing injury prevention, building power, and maintaining consistency.

Matt shared four primary tips. First, “start slow and light.” The key is to focus on proper form and technique before adding a heavy load.

Next: consistency. Results will only be seen through a commitment to a solid routine over numerous weeks in a row.

The third tip is to commit to a program. Peloton offers a wide variety of strength training programs, and this is a great way to take the guesswork out of strength training. As a reminder, you can find details on all of Peloton’s programs here.

Finally, Matt encourages members to challenge themselves both mentally and physically. A mental challenge can involve slowing down and working on proper form at the beginning; and then pushing through a physical challenge with heavier weights later on.

The Peloton blog post highlights many of these same sentiments, encouraging avid runners to make the most out of the winter season. According to the article:

Do you struggle to get outside and log runs during the cold winter months? We have just the excuse you need to run less this winter and sub in other types of training instead—namely, resistance training. Whether you think of it as bulking, your “off-season,” or a sort of hibernation, the fact is that most runners can benefit from focusing the next few months on building muscle.

Peloton recommends runners focus on weight lighting and strength training in the winter months to add variation and build a solid strength foundation. This will help runners perform even better during race season, allowing for better recovery and adding additional health benefits.
