Peloton ends lawsuits related to patent disputes over Peloton Tread & Tread+

Peloton has put more lawsuits behind them.

Last week, Peloton quietly got a lawsuit dismissed from Johnson Health Technology (JHT) – who own brands such as Matrix Fitness, Vision Fitness, Horizon Fitness.

The lawsuit was first filed by JHT in 2022, and alleged the Peloton Tread & Tread+ infringed on three of their patents.

These patents were “related to motors used in the products and sensors that detect user engagement as well as a removable operating unit, a controller connected to the unit and other devices.”

More than 2 years after the case began, Peloton was able to receive a review of these three patents before the Patent Trial & Appeal Board. In November of 2024, the appeal board ruled that the three JHT patents should be invalidated as they were “obvious in light two prior patents and two patent applications” as Bloomberg Law reported at the time.

In light of this ruling from the Patent Trial & Appeal Board, it appears that JHT has decided to no longer pursue the case over the patents in the court system. Peloton & Johnson Health Technology both jointly filed for a stipulation of dismissal last week, as first reported by Bloomberg Law. The court then closed the case – putting it behind them.

No agreement terms (if there even are any) were publicly shared. However, the stipulation of dismissal prevents either side from renewing their allegations in court again.

This follows Peloton ending other major lawsuits over the past several years, including settling a lawsuit with lululemon before announcing a 5 year global partnership.

Update: This article was updated to add additional context surrounding the patents going before the Patent Trial & Appeal board last year prior to the lawsuit being dismissed.
