New “Peloton History Summary” Tool that Provides Information About Used Bikes

Peloton has unveiled a new tool that provides information about used equipment. Called the “Peloton History Summary,” customers can now gain helpful insights before purchasing a previously owned Bike or Bike+.

Peloton made the announcement via press release:

For second-hand Peloton Bike and Bike+ private purchases, select Members will now be able to access a Peloton History Summary directly from Peloton detailing certain metrics of the hardware’s history. To help future Members feel confident about the quality of their second-hand purchase, the summary can be used as a reference guide to understand a Peloton Bike or Bike+ history, including the approximate number of historical workouts, date of first activation, protection plan eligibility, service visit history, number of previous owners, and more.

Many members purchase used Peloton devices directly from individual sellers, whether on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, eBay, or somewhere else. There have been reports of people experiencing issues with these used devices – whether they were actually rentals and should not have been sold, were unable to be activated, were damaged, or any other number of problems. The new Peloton History Summary tool is intended to help combat these kinds of issues.

A new website is available containing the tool: https://www.onepeloton.com/history-summary. Customers can enter the Bike/Bike+ serial number, their email, and indicate whether they are looking to buy or sell.

The tool can provide the following metrics about the device:

  • Number of hours ridden during Peloton workouts
  • Service visit history
  • Number of total owners
  • Whether the device is currently under a Peloton Protection Plan; and if so, when that plan expires

Note that the feature is currently in beta – meaning that it is only available in select markets within the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, for select devices.

Peloton publicized the news with current members via the Official Peloton Member page on Facebook:

We’re excited to introduce Peloton History Summary, a beta tool rolling out in select markets, starting today! If you’re considering buying or selling a used Peloton Bike or Bike+, you can now generate a detailed summary for it. A new webpage on the Peloton site is also available with information about how to assess the condition of a used bike, and presenting the Peloton Certified Refurbished program as an alternative option with more security.

Peloton also published a blog post with a comprehensive overview of what consumers should know when buying or selling used Bike/Bike+. The central “takeaway” is below:

The secondary market is an option for those looking to buy a less expensive Peloton Bike or Peloton Bike+ (and for those hoping to sell their equipment). However, Peloton prides itself on providing a top-notch Member experience—no matter where someone purchased their bike—so if you decide on buying a used Bike or Bike+ on the secondary market, make sure you do proper research to get the best value and highest quality product possible. With the Peloton History Summary, shoppers can make more informed purchase decisions, and sellers can succinctly share relevant details about their bike. It’s a win-win for both parties.

To that end, the Peloton History Summary tool is an extremely helpful resource, but not a guarantee. Customers should still proceed with caution and exercise their best judgment when purchasing a second-hand device.
