Discounts (but no trade in) available to existing members on new Peloton Cross Training Devices & Screen Is Not Backwards Compatible For All Devices

This morning, Peloton announced a refresh of their entire product line. The new versions of their products are now known as the “Cross Training” devices. This includes features like an upgraded rotating screen, Guide software built into the Plus series, the launch of Peloton IQ (Peloton’s AI suite of class recommendations) and more.

These are now the only products you can buy new from Peloton – and they all come at a price increase from their previous price points for the original / non-cross-training versions. For reference, the new prices are as follows (shown alongside with how much the increase is over the previous generation).

  • Peloton Cross Training Bike – $1,695 (+$250)
  • Peloton Cross Training Bike+ – $2,695 (+$200)
  • Peloton Cross Training Tread – $3,295 (+$300)
  • Peloton Cross Training Tread+ – $6,695 (+$700)
  • Peloton Cross Training Row+ – $3,495 (+$200)

One common question asked so far is if you can buy a new version of the Cross Training screen and use it on your original generation Peloton device. Unfortunately, this is not possible, as we have been told screens are not made to be backwards compatible. In at least some cases, such as the Tread+, this is because internal wiring that goes through the frame is different, so it would be a more in-depth update beyond simply swapping the screen.

However, in messages from support, they are stating that “new tablets are not available for the Original Series product line at this time” (emphasis ours) – indicating it’s possible this could change in the future, or become available for some devices and not others.

It remains to be seen if the third party community can find a way to add this backwards compatibility in, even if it isn’t being officially supported or offered by Peloton.

Note that the previous generation of Peloton devices are not being deprecated. They will continue to work as they do today. You just won’t get the new movement tracker features in strength classes if you do not upgrade. Several of the other Peloton IQ features, from personalized training plans to class recommendations are more are rolling out to the previous generation of devices as well.

Another question is whether Peloton will be offering a trade-in program for people who want to upgrade from an original Peloton device to the new Cross Training versions. This is not being offered. While Peloton had a trade-in program when the original Bike+ was first announced, it was later discontinued – and Peloton has confirmed it is not being brought back at this time.

Although there is no trade-in program, Peloton is offering discounts on the new cross-training devices to current members. The company has emailed current members (All-Access, App One, and App+ members) with the subject of “Introducing the new Cross Training Series”. At the bottom of the email is a discount code (starting with “PEL”). This will offer the following discounts:

  • Peloton Cross Training Bike – $300 off for a price of $1,395
  • Peloton Cross Training Bike+ – $700 off for a price of $1,995
  • Peloton Cross Training Tread – $500 off for a price of $2,795
  • Peloton Cross Training Tread+ – $1,200 off for a price of $5,495
  • Peloton Cross Training Row+ – $200 off for a price of $3,295

These coupon codes are valid until October 29th. You can use your code for 3 devices – but they will need to be made as separate orders.

While they are not offering a trade-in program, Peloton has created a new support page for people to “Upgrade their Experience.” There, they recommend people sell their device through the Peloton Repowered marketplace, or simply have their device removed to be recycled through their partner for a $155 fee.
