Half Marathon Pacing Tips from Peloton Instructor Matt Wilpers

Peloton has shared half marathon tips from instructor Matt Wilpers for members who might be participating in an upcoming race. Matt shared his tips through a post on Peloton’s social media channels.

The update was focused for the “spring half-marathoners”. The post caption reads that “runners of any level may find the half to be a more attainable distance than a full marathon, but that doesn’t make it any less of an achievement nor require less specialization in preparing for it”

The post is titled “Pacing strategy for your half marathon” and covers how runners should attempt to pace their runs while tackling a half marathon.

For the first three miles, Matt recommends starting strong but reserved. He says to start “at a pace you know you can sustain for the full half marathon, even though you’re full of excitement and energy.”

In miles four through six, Matt recommends focusing on settling in at the target pace. This is a good time to focus on other runners in the race as motivation, and also an opportunity to hydrate and maintain nutrition.

For miles seven through 10, Matt acknowledges that this can be one of the toughest parts of the race both mentally and physically. The key is to stay focused and do your best to maintain your pace.

In the final 3.1 miles, Matt states it is “time to gradually let it rip!” Depending on how much energy you have left, increase the pace as you approach the finish line. Matt also recommends focusing on hydration and nutrition through the remainder of the race.

The post also includes an average pace chart containing possible pace targets. You can see the full post via Instagram.
