Report: Peloton Will Remove the Video Chat Feature for Bike & Treads on June 27, 2022

Peloton has shared on social media that they will be removing the video chat feature from Bikes and Treads on Monday, June 27. Peloton responded to a Facebook post in the Official Peloton Member page, writing:

We recommend restarting your touch screen to help alleviate this issue, however as of Monday, June 27, 2022, Members will no longer be able to make video calls on their Peloton Bike, Bike+ or Tread during Peloton classes.

The video chat feature has been available for years and allows members to call their Peloton friends – in other words, individuals who both follow each other on the leaderboard – during a live or on demand Peloton class. By clicking on a friend’s name on the leaderboard, you will see a “video chat” button, which initiates a video call within the leaderboard. Again, this is only currently available if you both follow one another. The feature has historically been available for cycling, running, walking, and bootcamp classes (it is not available for strength or yoga classes taken from a Peloton device).

The Peloton support page for video chat has not yet been updated or removed.

It is unclear why Peloton is removing this feature. However, many members report the quality didn’t seem up to par with what they expected – and it didn’t appear to be a widely used feature, so could be removed due to either o f those reasons.

The company has not made any formal announcements about this development and it is probably unlikely that they will – rather, they’ll respond to inquiries on a case-by-case basis.

In a follow-up statement on social media, Peloton said this about the removal:

We’re removing the video call feature so we can focus on introducing innovative new features. Be on the lookout for upcoming features like the soon-to-launch Invite Friends feature that will give you more ways to workout and connect with other Members!

If you’ve used the video chat feature in the past, will you be sad to see it go?

I used this feature to ride with my mom every Sunday. We live in different states and it was so nice to share this. What a bummer peloton:-(

What the heck! Just got my bike yesterday and the person setting it up promoted this feature. Sad to not be able to work out with my mom

  • Gareth Gumbley says:

Very disappointed- I bought the more expensive bike to share the experience with my partner when we are apart

    Gutted and very disappointed …
Since the loss of this feature my friend and I have ridden less which is equally gutting.
The feature set between two friends or relatives was in my mind what made Peloton different 1/10 Peloton please rethink.

Wish they would bring back the video chat feature. One of the primary reasons I purchased the bike. And I just purchased the tread which also STILL is being sold with a camera…. Bring back our video chat. !!!
