Rumor: Peloton Considering Adding Guide Functionality to the Bike+

It appears that Peloton is considering adding Guide functionality to the Bike+. Peloton recently sent a survey to some members, indicating that they are exploring the possibility and are hoping to gauge members’ interest.

The survey asked about price point; as a reminder, the Peloton Guide currently costs $295 without any accessories, and the Bike+ currently costs $1,995 without any accessories. The survey asked how much more members would be willing to pay for the base price (not an additional monthly membership cost, just the base price) of their Bike+ if the device had Guide functionality built in.

Guide functionality currently encompasses one key feature: the movement tracker. The Guide Movement Tracker gives members credit for following the class plan – it does not count reps or check form, it only examines whether or not you’re doing the movement the instructor called out. However, Peloton has hinted that they will be adding rep counting – a highly requested feature from Guide users – to the Guide in the future.

Because the Bike+ screen swivels in different directions, allowing members to use their Bike+ tablet as a screen for workouts other than cycling (such as strength), it is possible that Guide functionality could be integrated into the tablet. The Bike+ tablet also has a camera, which allows members to video chat with other members during a class. The camera is another main component of the Guide.

The survey asked members a number of questions, including: how they take their strength classes (i.e. do they use their Bike+ to take strength content, or do they use the App on another device), how familiar they are with the features of the Bike+ (i.e. the swivel ability of the tablet and the high quality speakers), and how important each of these features are to them.

It is unclear from the survey whether Guide functionality would be possible with the existing Bike+ hardware, or if this would require a tablet upgrade for existing users. Looking solely at specs, it is possible that the current camera in the Bike+ tablet could perform movement tracking. However, the Guide has a wide angle lens that is used to auto-crop and center on the user, which is likely not possible with the existing Bike+ tablet.

If the functionality did end up requiring a new tablet it is possible that Peloton could offer existing users an upgrade at a discounted price, the way they did with the 1st generation Bike tablet. However, back when this happened in 2019 the discounted price was $350, which is more than the cost of the Guide at $295.

It is important to note that just because Peloton is surveying about this idea does not mean it will actually come to fruition. That being said, if you are an existing Bike+ user, would you be interested in adding Guide functionality to your device?

Yes, I would be interested as I use my Bike+ monitor for strength workouts.

I have the Guide and while it’s novel, there is so little actual functionality – definitely not worth the $300 price tag. If they added the features to the Bike+ as is, I would enjoy it, use it, but not pay additionally for it.

I would be interested but not at an additional cost. I believe the cost of my Bike+, along with the accessories I purchased, is enough considering the guide doesn’t offer the features I originally thought it would.
