Recall for Peloton Bike (original model PL01) issued by CPSC & Peloton over the Peloton Bike seat post

This morning, Peloton & the CPSC announced that a recall has been issued for the Peloton Bike (specifically, for the seat post). Note that this only applies to the original model Peloton Bike with a version number of PL01, and not the newer Peloton Bike+. Members can get a free replacement seat post sent to them to fix the issue.

The issue relates to the seat post of the bike, and that in some instances it can snap at the weld point. There have been 35 reported issues thus far, from around 2.16 million original Peloton Bikes sold in the US.

Update – even though the recall is officially for original Peloton bikes sold in the from Jan 2018 – May 2023, Peloton is messaging that ANY owner of a original Peloton bike in the US can get a free replacement seat post sent to them. The following message was posted by Peloton on social media: “we are offering the replacement seat post to all Peloton original Bike members in the US, regardless of when you purchased your Bike.”

Update 2 – A recall has now been issued for Canada as well, which also shares “The issue has occurred primarily in users who are taller than 5’11” (180 cm) and above 250 pounds (114 kg).”

Update 3 – DC Rainmaker shared the stat that you are more likely to be hit by lightning than have your original Peloton Bike seat post break (1 in 62,857 for Peloton, vs 1 in 15,300 for lightning).

Update 4 – Peloton has provided a shipping & delivery update on when members can expect to get their free replacement seat posts.

Update 5 – You can see pictures of a broken Peloton bike seat post and one member’s experience here.

Peloton has created a new page on their website with full details & FAQs about the recall.

Peloton is making a new seat post available to all US members who own the original Peloton Bike (model PL01). Members can order their free replacement post here on Peloton’s website. This will be a DIY install/repair once you receive your free replacement seat post. Peloton has also made a install video here.

For those wondering if they are impacted by this recall (i.e. if they own the PL01 model of the original Peloton bike) Peloton explained it as follows:

The Peloton original Bike model can be identified by its PL-01 model number on the label located on the inside front fork (near the flywheel), the red “P” logo followed by the white-colored Peloton brand name on the bike’s frame, and by its non-swivel display. As part of our commitment to product safety, we are voluntarily recalling the seat post of affected units to provide a free replacement seat post.

This voluntary recall only applies to the Peloton original Bike sold in the US. This matter does not affect international and North America Bike+ nor international Peloton original Bikes.

Although we know many Peloton owners have had issues with the seat post slipping (on both the original Bike & newer Bike+), this recall is due to issues with the weld joint and the chance of it snapping & breaking on the original Peloton Bike seat post.

As we shared earlier this week, the Peloton Bike was temporarily removed for sale from the Peloton website. However, it is expected that sometime today it should be available for sale again – and all bikes sold moving forward will have the updated seat post installed.

Peloton shared in their press release they would be emailing all Bike owners (both Bike & Bike+) alerting them of the news. You can read the email sent to impacted members at the bottom of this article. The press release stated:

While this is a US Peloton original Bike issue, we are always focused on our global Member community and the need to ensure they are informed. We are proactively communicating with all Members who own a Peloton Bike – either the original Bike or Bike+. We believe Members should be aware of the US issue, understand if they are affected (or not) by the voluntary recall, and guide them on what steps they should take, if any.

There is also expected to be a pop-up alert on the tablet for Bike owners who are impacted.

Peloton clarifies that the fix for this recall is a free replacement seat post. Unlike the Tread+ recall, they are not giving refunds for all devices previously sold:

Members who are affected by this recall can now order their free replacement seat post that will be shipped directly to them. Our normal product return policy continues to apply. As our standard return policy states, you are eligible to request a return of your Peloton original Bike if you are within 30 days of your delivery date, subject to approval. If you are participating in a 30-day Home Trial and are within that trial period you are also eligible to request a return.

There have been several signs over the past week that a recall might be on the way.

Last Thursday, Peloton revealed in their 10-Q quarterly filing with the SEC that it was working with the CPSC on a “corrective action plan” related to the seat post safety issue. It noted that the issue was discovered by a new Product Safety Compliance Program at Peloton, which had been formed in the wake of the Peloton Tread+ recall.

Then, on Tuesday, we reported that Peloton had stopped selling the original Peloton Bike in both the US & Canada. While it was still listed on the Peloton website, the shopping cart was replaced with a “Temporarily Unavailable” button. The Bike was also pulled from Amazon and DICK’S Sporting Goods later that day. We had also reported earlier on Tuesday that the Bike had been pulled from the Mother’s Day sale currently happening, and that the Bike was also no longer listed through the Peloton Bike rental program.

Peloton’s filing with the SEC states that Peloton “voluntarily notified” the CPSC about this issue – a stark contrast from the Tread+ recall following the death of a child where former Peloton CEO John Foley sent a letter to members stating there were no plans to initiate a safety recall of that Tread+ – only for a recall to be issued a few weeks later.

This is the fourth recall issued by Peloton. Peloton recalled pedals on first generation bikes in October of 2020. Then, in May 2021, Peloton issued recalls on both the Peloton Tread & Tread+. The Tread returned to market a little over 3 months later in August 2021. The Tread+ remains unavailable and under a recall notice (members can return the Tread+ for a full recall until November 2023), with Peloton agreeing to a $19 million fine earlier this year for their handling of the Tread+ recall.

We’ll be sure to share updates as they become available. If you have questions about the recall, you can see Peloton’s support page here.

Peloton’s email to impacted members read:
