Original Peloton Bike Seat Post Also Recalled in Canada & clarifies situations Peloton seat post might break

Canada has joined the United States in issuing a voluntary recall for the original Peloton Bike seat post. This should not come as a surprise, as the U.S. recall issued Thursday indicated that more information would be on the way from Canada soon.

While the U.S. has seen 35 reports of injury due to the issue out of around 2.2 million bikes sold, Canada has only had one reported incident out of 108,000 units sold, and that incident did not cause an injury. The Canadian recall information also provides more specificity regarding the situations in which the safety issue has occurred:

The bike’s seat post assembly can break during use, posing fall and injury hazards to the user. The issue has occurred primarily in users who are taller than 5’11” (180 cm) and above 250 pounds (114 kg).

This information wasn’t stated in the original US recall notice, however, one would imagine this data on when the seat post issue primarily occurred (i.e. the heights & weights) was gathered from the recalled models in all countries (including the US), and not just Canada.

One other small difference between the recall notices is how the recalls were titled. In Canada, the recall notice is officially “Peloton Bike Model PL01 Seat Post recalled due to potential fall and injury hazard”. In the US the recall was titled “Peloton Recalls Two Million Exercise Bikes Due to Fall and Injury Hazards” – not specifying in the title the issue was with the seat post.

In case you missed it, on May 11 Peloton and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a voluntary recall for the original Peloton Bike due to a potential safety issue with the seat post. The recall only applies to original model Peloton Bikes sold between January 2018 and May 2023 with a version number of PL01 – the recall does not apply to the Bike+. Like in the U.S., customers can visit Peloton’s website to register to have a replacement post sent to them at no cost.

Now, Peloton has published an official press release regarding the Canaidan recall, and a new dedicated support page for Canada is also available.

The press release reiterates that original Peloton Bikes sold in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia are not included in the current recall – and as mentioned above, no Bike+ models sold anywhere are included.

It’s also worth noting that although the recall is officially only for those sold between 2018 & 2023, Peloton is offering the replacement seat post to any owner of an original Peloton Bike, even if they were sold prior to 2018.

The full details of the Canadian recall can be viewed via the Health Canada website and Peloton support page, and affected customers can order their complementary remedy seat post replacement via the Peloton website.

Canadian members who own a Peloton Bike will be getting an email in the next few days notifying them of the recall, if they haven’t received it already.

We will continue to share updates regarding the voluntary recall of the original Peloton Bike as they become available.
