Peloton Acknowledges Issue with Outdoor Runs Tracking on iOS App + Peloton Android Outdoor Runs Coming Soon?

Update – Peloton has pushed out a new version of the iOS app (15.29.0) they say will fix this issue. We’ve yet to hear reports on whether or not it actually does.

For the past couple of weeks members have reported issues with distance tracking for runs on the Peloton iOS App. On April 26 Peloton formally recognized the issue and indicated that they are working to address the problem. A new incident report states:

We’ve identified an issue where distance tracking on the iOS app does not track correctly. Our team is currently preparing an app update to address this issue.

When you take an outdoor run via the Peloton App, upon completion of the run you’ll be able to see statistics about the workout, including: distance, elevation, calories, average pace, average speed, strive score (if using a heart rate monitor) and a map of the route.

However, over the past couple of weeks members have reported that their distance and pace while completing an outdoor run via the Peloton iOS App have not been accurately captured – oftentimes showing numbers and distances much lower than what was actually achieved.

For those working towards the monthly running challenge, this can be quite frustrating, as their miles are not being accurately captured.

Though Peloton has acknowledged the issue they have not shared a timeline for when members can expect the problem to be addressed.

In addition, we’ve also heard a rumor that Peloton is getting closer to releasing the Outdoor Run GPS tracking feature for their Android App. This feature was first teased at Homecoming 2019, and then released for iOS shortly after. 3 years later it sounds like it might finally be coming to Androids. The exact timing on the release is still up in the air.

Have you been experiencing this issue with outdoor runs in recent weeks?

The new iOS version 15.29.0 is already available via the App Store and is said to fix this problem. You might want to update the text accordingly.

  • C says:

I have the latest version IOS ran yesterday and today and the app did not pick up the miles. Thankfully Garmin does;. Peloton should explore a relationship with Garmin and just upload from garmin.

  • DJ says:

There is still an issue. The run distance and pace are off about a half mile for every two miles run.

  • Krisbros says:

Still an issue. Went on a run with my husband today and my app/Apple Watch said it was 2.7 miles and his Garmin tracked it as 3.5 miles.

  • Cathy says:

Definitely NOT fixed. I made sure to update to latest version of the app and restarted both phone and Apple Watch. I run with a coros watch on other wrist (purchased a while back when I noticed this was an issue) on 5/1 and 5/2 and both times, the peloton app missed at least 0.8-1 mile of my runs. Irritating but a first world problem for sure!

  • Kyle says:

I’ve run 15 miles so far this month and the May Running Challenge has credited me only 1.8 miles. I’ve updated and restarted to no avail.

  • Judy says:

Yes, I have had the same trouble incorrect distance tracking. NOW 5/5 & 5/7 I get nothing recorded. NOTHING!!! It’s BLANK when I finish. 🙁

  • Tim says:

It’s not just the iOS app, but it’s an issue on Android as well. I just finished a three mile run and it’s only displaying my total calories burned and my heart rate graph – no distance, map, or anything like that. I’m pretty pissed that it’s not counting towards my May Running Challenge. Also when it ports over to Strava it shows it as completed there, but my moving time and calories burned are both zero and because of that it doesn’t go to MyFitnessPal.

Tried the new Just Workout feature today and it does not track distance or kcal correctly. Hopefully they can fix the issue.

  • Ann says:

So for several weeks this issue seemed to be fixed, but I am experiencing this issue again. Very annoying since they now have an outdoor challenge. Walked 3 miles today and didn’t even get to to 2 miles. 😩

  • Teddy Bfree says:

6.7.2022 – Walked today. My wife and i did the same route together. She got 2.98 miles and i got 1.48. It’s not fixed for me. My phone, app & watch are updated to the latest updates!!

    Grrrrrrr!

  • Nikhil says:

Yesterday, my friend and I did a 40min walk. My app showed a distance of 1.8mi and her’s showed a distance of 2.3mi. We’re both on the latest version of the app. How can it be so different!?!?!?!

  • Dana says:

Not only is the GPS tracker still wrong, but it says I’m moving at a pace much faster than I am. As a Pelotortoise, my run speed is around 10-13 minutes per mile, and my walk speed is between 16-20. Yesterday’s outdoor walk said I had a 11 minute walking pace on a 3 mile walk that’s actually a 2 mile walk. It doesn’t get it wrong when I take indoor classes outside, just the outdoor classes or “just walk” beta.

  • Kelley says:

I did a 20 minute walk class. It said I was walking 11/min miles and I did 1.6 miles in 20 minutes. The route I did was only about 1.3 to 1.35. Did a shorter walk with my dog after on just workout and it said I went much farther than I did. Wish it would fix the problem.

  • Paul David says:

Still not working. Speed and mileage is well below the actual.

  • Ruthie says:

Same! Just got back from a HIIT run and average pace is a whole minute off!!!

  • Keri says:

Issue is still not fixed. I walked for 60 minutes the other day and it should have totally to 3.75 miles. According to the app it’s only .18. So frustrating when working towards a challenge.

  • Anne says:

The app mapped my run, however no distance, time or any metrics were provided.

  • Matt says:

Just mapped a 45 min on Peloton outdoor (Android) compared against my Garmin (started at exactly the same time) 1 mile difference on the Peloton App (less) and 2.5 min per mile slower average!

    So still an issue!!

  • Patrick says:

This is still an issue. Just finished a run where, per the app, my average miles individually were around 8 minutes. But then my average for the run is 9 minutes? Isn’t that mathematically impossible?

  • Amy says:

I walk 5 days a week. The GPS will drop 4-5 times, leaving big gaps in my distance and my pace will be off by 5-7 minutes per mile

  • Taara S Hassan Williams says:

My distance and pace stopped working in July all of a sudden. I’ve tried deleting, reinstalling, reconnecting to my watch and nothing. My chat with tech support said “It’s a known issue and our Engineers will email with an update.” Not helpful and very frustrating

  • Thequackenbush says:

The app was working fine, and today reverted to the no distance / pace tracking.

Frustrating, even after deletion and reinstalling

  • Sabrina McBride says:

My distance is longer tracking correctly. It’s much lower.

  • Gabby says:

Wearing a Fitbit and carrying my Android phone during Peloton Outdoors Walks. Last 2 walks of 3 miles each Peloton recorded 15 cal and 30 cal respectively, while the Fitbit recorded over 300 calories. Walk calories previously with Peloton were somewhat lower than my Fitbit calories, but now it’s way off. Hope they fix this!

  • Lauren W says:

Absolutely still an issue. Just stacked two outdoor classes; the first at 15 mins logged semi-accurate and the second 45 min class said 0km. Very frustrating being in the middle of marathon training and every mile counts.
