New Feature: Captions & Subtitles now available on live Peloton classes

Update – Peloton has started to advertise this feature through popup alerts. It appears to only be for English language classes for now.

Over the past few days, Peloton has quietly rolled out a new feature – class subtitles are now available on live Peloton classes. Prior to this, subtitles had only been available for on-demand Peloton rides (which show up around 24-48 hours after the class is available on-demand).

This new tweak to subtitles launched around last Wednesday, August 18th.

Peloton was quietly sharing the news in some comments on social media:

Peloton’s support page for subtitles mentions this new ability as well now (emphasis ours):

Subtitles are available for both live and on-demand classes. On-demand subtitles are typically available within 48 hours after they were originally recorded. To find classes with subtitles, tap the ‘Subtitles’ button in the on-demand library.

From initial reports & testing, these live subtitles appear to be mostly accurate. It can sometimes get slightly tripped up by numbers. For example, in Denis Morton’s live class this morning, he called out “In Three, In Two, In One. 10 seconds slow”. The live subtitles captured this as “In Three. In Two. In 110 seconds Slow.”

Peloton notes that subtitles are available for on-demand classes created since October 2018. With the most recent class purge, that means basically every class in the Peloton library (that supports it) should now have subtitles available for it.

The support page mentions that subtitles are not available for audio-only classes (outdoor runs & some meditation). However, you should be able to use live subtitles for Peloton rides, runs, yoga, strength, and more.

For those of you who do Power Zone Training rides, don’t forget to also look into using the free Power Zone Timer Tool & Library – between that tool and captions, you can ride any power zone ride with your own music, and never miss a zone change.
