Soul Assassins (DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill) Files To Dismiss Music Lawsuit Against Peloton

The lawsuit filed by Soul Assassins against Peloton over music rights has been dropped, as first reported by Digital Music News.

As a refresher, California-based music publishing company Soul Assassins filed a complaint against Peloton for copyright infringement back in July of 2022. This is the publishing company owned by DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill. The suit took issue with 11 songs being used in Peloton classes, and was asking for financial compensation amounting to $1.65 million.

Only a few months later, Muggs has dropped the lawsuit even though Peloton has yet to respond. The filing states:

Pursuant to Fed. R. Civ. P. 41(a)(1)(A)(i) Plaintiff Soul Assassins, Inc. hereby provides notice that is hereby dismissing without prejudice and without costs, all claims alleged in the complaint against defendant Peloton Interactive Inc. (“Peloton”). Defendant Peloton has not filed an answer to the complaint or a motion for summary judgment. Therefore, it is respectfully submitting the dismissal under Rule 41(a)(1)(A)(i) is appropriate. Each party shall bear its own attorney’s fees and costs.

Peloton previously faced a major lawsuit in 2019 from the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA), who alleged that Peloton had not obtained the proper licensing to play certain songs in their classes. The suit resulted in a major purge of Peloton classes, and Peloton is now facing a class action lawsuit from a small group of Peloton members as a result of that purge. The NMPA lawsuit was settled in 2020.
