Gwen Bethel Riley to take over as Peloton’s Head of Music

Variety revealed this morning that Gwen Bethel Riley, current VP of Music Partnerships, will become Peloton’s new Senior Vice President and Head of Music.

Riley will take over from Paul DeGooyer, who has been with Peloton for five years and served as Head of Music for the past three. DeGooyer oversaw Peloton’s legal battle with the National Music Publisher’s Association earlier this year.

Prior to joining Peloton last August, Riley spent 10 years at Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media. As the company’s Head of Music Business Affairs, she dealt with licensing music for video games, consumer products, and live events. She has also worked with music licensing for the film industry.

This experience makes Riley a natural fit as Peloton continues to work with music publishers such as the NPMA to refine Peloton’s music licensing strategy as a part of a joint collaboration agreement that came out of the lawsuit between NPMA and Peloton.

NMP President & CEO David Israelite complimented Peloton’s innovations after the settlement and gave the following comment:

“We are pleased the music publishers and their songwriter partners in this case have reached a settlement with Peloton that compensates creators properly and sets forth the environment for a positive relationship going forward. Peloton is an innovative company, and we are impressed with the company’s investment in technology and commitment to delivering a powerful, authentic music experience. We look forward to our ongoing collaboration to find solutions that will benefit all songwriters.”

No word yet as to whether any classes that were taken down during the lawsuit will be returned to the Peloton library, but we look forward to seeing what Riley brings to Peloton.
