How do I fix the Peloton White Screen of Death (Flashing or Blinking Screen of Death)

UPDATE February 22nd, 2022 – Peloton has an ongoing outage today. It is still ongoing, but you can see the latest updates here – we’ll post more there as we know more.

An error case that can occur on Peloton bikes and treads is that after boot up, the screen either turns white and stays like that and doesn’t load anything else, or starts flashing or blinking a blank white screen.

Advanced trouble shooting steps involve factory reset (which won’t result in a loss of data, but can be annoying). First, we recommend you try the following steps to solve the issue – it seems to fix the error for a large number of people.

Solution for fixing the Flashing/Blinking White Screen of Death on Peloton

  1. Unplug the power cord from the base of your Peloton (on the Bike/Bike+, this at the very back)
  2. Unplug both cords that go into the back of the tablet/screen
  3. Press both the power button and volume up buttons at the same time. Hold both for 60 seconds
  4. Let go of both buttons, wait 10 seconds
  5. Plug both cords for the tablet back in
  6. Plug the power cord back into the base of your Peloton
  7. Press the power button on your Peloton to turn it back on and hopefully see a fully functioning screen again

If this fails to fix the issue, your next steps might be to try a factory reset, cache reset, or recovery boot. In rare cases a new screen is needed to fix the issue.

You can try the below steps to factory reset your tablet to fix the flashing white screen if the above steps didn’t work. These steps were provided by Peloton. The steps differ depending on if you have a Bike or Bike+ or Tread or Tread+ – we have both listed. You can also see a different version of how to do this on Peloton’s support page here.

Factory Reset for fixing the Flashing/Blinking White Screen of Death on Peloton Bike+ & Tread

  1. Shut down the tablet with a long press of the power button (or disconnect the USB cable on the back of the touchscreen)
  2. Hold down the volume up button and keep holding.
  3. Press the power button on the touchscreen without holding (or reconnect the USB cable on the back of the touchscreen) while still depressing the volume up button.
  4. Once the Android Recovery screen appears, release the volume up button.
  5. Use the volume keys to navigate up/down to the Wipe Data / Factory Reset option and confirm the selection using the Power button on the back of the touchscreen.
  6. You will have to sign back into your network and download the most recent update again; during this process, you may see the percentage/progress indicator restart multiple times, this is completely normal. Once the downloads have been completed you can log in.

Factory Reset for fixing the Flashing/Blinking White Screen of Death on original Peloton Bike

  1. Power off your touch screen by holding the power button on top and selecting “Shutdown.”

If you cannot use the screen at all remove the plug from the base at the back of the bike or disconnect it from the wall outlet, and wait approximately fifteen seconds before plugging it back in.
  2. Hold the Volume Up button and the power button until the screen illuminates, when it illuminates let go of both buttons. This will start your touchscreen in Boot Mode. (If you do not see Boot Mode skip to #5.)
  3. Use the volume up button to select “Recovery” and the volume down button to proceed. The screen may dim or show the Peloton logo briefly before alerting you that there is “No command”, this is the expected result.
  4. On this screen press the volume up and power buttons simultaneously. Hold these buttons for approximately half a second. The screen should change to text with a list of options.

Don’t worry if you cannot get it on the first try, it can take a few attempts.
  5. Use the volume buttons to highlight “Wipe all user data / Factory reset” and use the power button to proceed.
  6. Use the volume buttons to highlight “Yes” and press the power button to proceed.
  7. Once the data has been wiped, use the volume button to select “Reboot system now” if it is not highlighted by default and press the power button.
  8. You will have to sign back into your network and download the most recent update again; during this process, you may see the percentage/progress indicator restart multiple times, this is completely normal. Once the downloads have been completed you can log in.

Factory Reset for fixing the Flashing/Blinking White Screen of Death on the Peloton Tread+

If you have a Tread+, try the below steps if neither of the above work, as reported by @thethriftyrunner on IG.

The tread+ is a little different than the instructions. Turn it off. (There’s a switch on the base by where it plugs in.) unplug it at the base. Turn it back on and leave it alone for a minute. Turn it off. Plug it back in. Start holding the volume up button on the tablet and use your toe to flip the switch back on. When you see the logo, stop holding the volume button. The screen will walk you through the rest.
