Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy Still Hopes To Bring Back the Tread+ For Sale Again

Earlier this month, Peloton held their Q3 2023 earnings call, and while most of the news related to the launch of app tiers and a forthcoming rebrand this month, there was also some mentions made about the Tread+.

Update – On May 18th, 2023, the CPSC has approved a fix for the Peloton Tread+, clearing the way for it to be available for sale again.

As a reminder, the Tread+ is Peloton’s original treadmill device. It has not been available for sale since 2021 due to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall. (Note that this is a different recall than the most recent recall over the Peloton bike seat post.)

On the latest earnings call CEO Barry McCarthy mentioned that Peloton is working with the U.S. government on a fix that will allow them to resume selling the Tread+. He also mentioned he still believed that Peloton would bring the Tread+ back for new members.

McCarthy stated:

“At some point in our future, I anticipate we’ll have a second treadmill product. It was two years ago roughly that we withdrew the Tread+ from the marketplace.
We don’t control the timing on that, but we have invested a lot in our relationship with the government, and that relationship has dramatically improved since Tammy and her team have invested time in that with our engineering team.”

McCarthy is likely referring to Tammy Albarran, Peloton’s new Chief Legal Officer who joined the company last year. McCarthy has previously stated last year that he is “hopeful” about the return of the Tread+, and his statements on the latest earnings call reaffirm that message.

The most recent significant development in the ongoing situation with the Tread+ was back in January when Peloton agreed to pay a $19 million civil penalty to the CPSC.

More recently than that, the Tread+ was added back in a few places in Peloton’s Terms of Service last week.

In 2022 the CPSC recall was extended through November 2023. At the time, Peloton maintained that they are working on a physical rear guard for the device, which has been hinted at in new patents that we reported on in November. This past March Peloton filed a patent application for such a device. However, any measure designed to address the safety of the Tread+ would need to be reviewed and approved by the CPSC, and it is not clear whether that has happened.

As always, we will continue sharing updates about the potential return of the Tread+ as they become available.

It appears the instructors are using the tread+ in classes for a couple months now. Might not be the same unit but its the same deck as the tread+.
