Peloton Bike Rental Program (One Peloton Club) expanding – Now Nationwide

Peloton has again expanded the One Peloton Club – which allows members to rent a Bike and bundle the cost of the hardware with the monthly subscription fee – and the program is now available nationwide. Earlier this week, Peloton made the announcement via press release.

Peloton Global Head of Marketing Dara Treseder explained the expansion of the program and its intended impact:

“As the global leader in the connected fitness space, we are committed to delivering convenient, engaging and motivating workout experiences to a broad array of consumers who want to be the best version of themselves anytime, anywhere…Our expanded national rental program allows even the most value-conscious customers to fully immerse in the Peloton experience.”

The current rental pricing is below:

  • Original Bike: $89/month + $150 one-time setup fee; $895 to purchase after 12 months
  • Bike+: $119/month + $150 one-time setup fee; $1,595 to purchase after 12 months

This pricing includes the All Access membership that must accompany every hardware purchase. Peloton has not indicated whether other devices – such as the Tread or the upcoming rower – will be added to the program in the future.

This nationwide expansion follows CEO Barry McCarthy’s recent interview with Bloomberg, in which he hinted that the One Peloton Club would soon be expanding. This points to part of McCarthy’s overall strategy to become less hardware-centric and more software and content-centric. He told Bloomberg:

“We’re making the bet that if you love our service as much as the rest of our users do, you’ll exhibit low monthly churn and have a high lifetime value,” McCarthy said. “We’ll recoup the investment we made in the hardware plus profit over time.”

The One Peloton Club was first launched earlier this year and has gone through a number of changes in only a matter of months. The program began in a small number of test markets before quickly expanding to additional states. Peloton also lowered the pricing only a few weeks after that. In June Peloton expanded the program to the continental U.S. and made sign-ups available online for the first time since the program’s arrival, before removing the Bike+ from the program shortly thereafter. The Bike+ was added back to the program just last month.
