Apple announces Apple Fitness+ (Fitness Plus), a new Peloton Digital competitor

During Apple’s iPad and Apple Watch event today, Apple also unveiled their new Apple Fitness+ service, a digital fitness platform. Rumors about Apple getting into the fitness category first appeared in August. At the time, the project was referenced by it’s code name Seymour.

Apple Fitness+ will have a wide variety of workout types available – the initial list includes: Treadmill, HIIT, Rowing, Dance, Cycling, Yoga, Core, Strength, and cooldowns. However, at least initially it appears that there won’t be a constant stream of new workouts being added. Apple’s marketing for the service mentions it will get “New workouts every week” – rather than new classes daily. Apple also mentions they will attempt to suggest your next workout for you based on your past workouts and preferences.

The list of instructors who will be on the Apple Fitness+ Service at launch include:

  • Kyle Adrill
  • Ben Allen
  • Dustin Brown
  • Scott Carvin
  • Gregg Cook
  • Josh Crosby
  • Tyrell Desean
  • Amir Ekbatani
  • Emily Fayette
  • Molly Fox
  • Anja Garcia
  • Jhon Gonzalez
  • Betina Gozo
  • Jamie-Ray Hartshorne
  • Sherica Holmon
  • LaShawn Jones
  • Kim Ngo
  • Kym Perfetto
  • Sam Sanchez
  • Jessica Skye
  • Bakari Williams

Apple users are able to subscribe to the new Fitness+ service in two ways. You can either purchase it standalone for $9.99/month (or at a discount for the year at $79.99). Alternatively, subscribers to the top-tier Premier level of the new Apple One bundle will see Apple Fitness+ bundled into that subscription. Current Apple Watch users will get one month of Apple Fitness+ for a free, and purchasers of new Apple Watches will get 3 months for free.

Peloton Digital currently costs $12.99/month – but (currently) provides a much broader library worth of content. It will be interesting to see whether customers think the price difference is more important, and lean towards Apple Fitness+, or think the greater selection of content is more valuable, and go with Peloton Digital.

According to the FAQs, an Apple Watch Series 3 or later device will be required to use the Apple Fitness+ service.
